A Warm Welcome to Parents!
When parents such as you choose to entrust the education of your son or daughter to Marquette University, we know that you take that responsibility very seriously. And we do as well, as indeed we should. My colleagues and I are well aware that you as a parent have poured out your time, your efforts, your energy and, most of all, your love and care to prepare your son or daughter for college and for adult life, and we recognize that we are building on the many good things that you have already accomplished.
All the more reason for us to welcome the presence of your son or daughter so that we can build upon the lessons you have taught and allow your son or daughter to become not only a well-qualified and highly capable professional, but also a first-rate human being committed to excellence, faith, leadership and service.
During their high school years, students need more structure and direction. But when they reach college age, these gradually need to be relaxed and loosened so that these young people can achieve the proper level of independence and self-directedness they will need as mature adults. Consequently, we try to give them room to spread their wings while at the same time, in fidelity to our Jesuit values, being ready to lend a caring and compassionate hand whenever needed, particularly as they work to navigate the more challenging stages of their personal journey.
More than anything, we strive both inside the classroom and out to engage our students in a rigorous educational experience that will transform their minds and hearts so that when they graduate they will have become not only better educated, but better human beings. From your sons and daughters we will demand excellence in all things. We will encourage them to lead lives of moral integrity, lives that are guided by faith. We will challenge them to develop as truly professional and principled leaders. And we will remind them of their responsibilities to our wider human family – particularly to those who are poor or otherwise living on the margins of society.
No one loves your son or daughter more than you. And so if the work that we do meets with your approval, that is a good indication that we are doing our job the way it ought to be done.
I am grateful for our partnership and pray that your sons and daughters will be blessed in every way by our good and gracious God, now and always.
