Marquette addresses impact of financial downturn

Amid the economic turmoil in today’s world, Marquette University is in a strong and stable financial position and is committed to helping students in need identify the resources necessary to continue their Marquette education.

More detail is available on the parents’ Web site, which includes a question-and-answer section on the impact of the current economic downturn.

Families should plan now to file the Federal Application For Student Aid (FAFSA).  Applications can be submitted as early as Jan. 1, 2009, for the fall 2009 semester. Everyone who files the FAFSA — everyone — is eligible to receive some form of financial aid, whether it's student employment or low-interest loans.

Protect property, cars during winter break

Students living in the near off-campus area can register their residences with the Vacant House Watch program offered by Marquette’s Department of Public Safety prior to leaving campus for winter break. Public Safety officers will monitor vacant residences during their routine patrols of the neighborhood. The information provided to Public Safety remains strictly confidential. Students can also obtain forms via Public Safety's Web site. Completed forms need to be delivered or mailed to Public Safety by Monday, Dec. 22.

Students concerned about leaving their vehicles unattended can obtain free
on-campus parking during the break. Students can register vehicles and
obtain a parking pass with Parking Services after their last final exam.
For more information, call Parking Services at 414-288-6911.

Talk about career goals

Winter break is a great time to talk to your child about his or her career goals or future plans.  Each year in college brings up different issues in a student’s career exploration.  For many students, freshman year is about developing the blueprint, sophomore year builds the foundation, junior year evaluates progress, and senior year has the student planning and undertaking the job search. Visit the parent’s portion of the Career Services Center Web site for a detailed list of questions that can assist you in having a conversation with your student at any level of his or her career exploration.

Stuck for Christmas gift ideas? The Career Services Center reminds parents that it is never too early for students to start building a professional wardrobe.  Suits and business casual clothing are great gifts to help them get started.  Padfolios and resume paper are essential job-hunting accessories as well.

Learn more about suicide prevention

Marquette’s Link for Life program is a grant-funded effort to address suicide, the second leading cause of death among college students and the most preventable one. As part of this program, Marquette is providing suicide prevention training to as many members of the Marquette community, including faculty, staff, administrators and students, as possible.

Parents are also an important part of this equation. We invite you to attend a QPR  - “Question, Persuade, Refer” – training, in which you will learn how to recognize if someone may be suicidal, what to ask in response, and how to persuade them to take a referral to get help.  Please join us in the effort to eradicate suicide.  Contact the Counseling Center for more information at 414-288-7172.

New living/learning community for fall 2009

Do you have a freshman student interested in joining a unique living community next year? Beginning in fall 2009, a select group of 48 sophomore students will be housed in the Dorothy Day Social Justice Living/Learning Community in Straz Tower. The students will live and learn together as they enroll in special Service Learning sections of philosophy and theology courses, and become actively involved with social justice issues in the Milwaukee community.  It is designed to foster meaningful reflection on how concepts taught in the classroom integrate with their service experiences. The activities will help students connect to the meaning of social justice in their lives.

Freshmen interested in applying for the program should contact the Office of Residence Life now for more information on application procedures.  Additional details, including contact information and certain course requirements, are available online.

Dr. Edward de St. Aubin, Associate Professor of Psychology

Dr. Edward de St. Aubin, associate professor of psychology, was honored this year with the university’s highest teaching award, the Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J., Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.

Dr. de St. Aubin studies identity and meaning-making in adults, stigmatized groups and those suffering major life disruptions, such as a spinal cord injury. He brings those same ideas into the classroom by focusing on sharpening aspirations and making meaning for his students.

“I like being surrounded by young minds that are actively being transformed,” says de St. Aubin. “The bottom line is I like teaching.”

Dr. de St. Aubin received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Loyola University and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He previously taught at Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay before joining the Marquette faculty. Dr. de St. Aubin’s scholarship has resulted in two published books and dozens of book chapters and journal articles.
