Dr. Michael R. Lovell elected first lay president of Marquette University

On Wednesday, March 26, Dr. Michael R. Lovell was unanimously elected the 24th president of Marquette University by the Marquette Board of Trustees. As the university's first lay president, he will succeed Interim President Robert A. Wild, S.J. Lovell will take office on Aug. 1, 2014. At the announcement, President-elect Lovell expressed a desire to enhance an already strong student experience and afterward spent an hour meeting with students in the Alumni Memorial Union.

John F. Ferraro, Bus Ad '77, chair of the Presidential Search Committee and vice chair of the Board of Trustees, was interviewed about the election of President-elect Lovell. Ferraro discussed the historic nature of the first lay president in Marquette's history, the search process and the qualities that made President-elect Lovell the Board of Trustee's unanimous first choice to lead the university into the future.

NEWS FOR PARENTS

Rev. James Martin, S.J., to be Commencement speaker

Rev. James Martin, S.J., will be Marquette University's Commencement speaker Sunday, May 18. As part of the ceremony, Father Martin will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree. Father Martin is a best-selling author, frequent commentator in national and international media, and sought after speaker. Marquette's Commencement ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May, 18, at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

All parents, family and friends are invited to attend Commencement weekend, May 16 to May 18. The all-university Baccalaureate Mass will take place at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the U.S. Cellular Arena. No tickets are required for the Mass. Information regarding college Commencement ceremonies is available online, with each college having different ticket guidelines.

Summer class registration now open

Marquette's six-week accelerated Summer Studies program offers more than 1,000 options, including more than 50 online courses. Registration for the summer classes is now open for courses ranging from core, required classes to international experiences. More information about Summer Studies, including housing and student services, is available online.

Students create social media campaigns to promote Marquette

Students in Marquette's Diederich College of Communication have been working this semester on social media campaigns for programs across campus, including projects for Marquette's autism research, service trips, childhood literacy programs, international student housing and robotics. The campaigns went live to the public earlier this week.

Online Exclusive: A spring break recap: Giving back is the new black

Though students like to relax and unwind on spring break, they enjoy the opportunity to give back even more. Service trips have become an increasingly popular Marquette spring break alternative, and this year more than 300 students spent their vacations volunteering at sites around the country through the Marquette Action Program.


MARQUETTE EVENTS

Lil' Sibs Weekend, April 11-13

Online registration for Lil' Sibs Weekend is now closed. However, siblings of Marquette students can register for the weekend in person Friday, April 11 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union, Marquette Place. Parents or guardians of siblings must be present to register their child.

Alumni National Awards Weekend, April 24-26

Alumni National Awards Weekend is a chance for Marquette to honor distinguished alumni from every college and school who represent the heart, soul and spirit of Marquette. A full list of honorees and details about the weekend are available online, where individuals can send a congratulatory message to the honorees.

Senior Family Toast and Dinner, May 17

Families of graduating seniors are invited to celebrate students' accomplishments at the Senior Family Toast and Dinner during Commencement weekend, immediately following Baccalaureate Mass. The dinner will include a champagne toast by the 2014 Commencement speaker, Rev. James Martin, S.J. Space is limited and families are encouraged to register online. A reception will begin Saturday at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The event is $25 for adults and $15 for children 10 and under. Senior Week, May 11-17

Senior Week includes a variety of events for graduating seniors to celebrate their accomplishments and enjoy Marquette's campus and the city of Milwaukee. Tickets for all events are still available, including the discounted package deal.

Steve Wojciechowski named new head men's basketball coach

Steve Wojciechowski, associate head coach under Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University, has been named the 17th head coach of the Marquette men's basketball program, announced President-elect Michael R. Lovell and Interim President Robert A. Wild, S.J. As a player and coach, Wojciechowski, 37, was a part of Duke's winning tradition, serving on the coaching staff for two NCAA tournament champions. During his tenure, the Blue Devils posted an incredible 441-92 record and competed in the NCAA tournament every year.
