Marquette celebrates start of Advent season, hosts holiday concerts


Marquette University will celebrate the beginning of the Advent season with a Mass and tree-lighting ceremony. “Igniting Hope: Miracle on Westowne Square” will take place the first Sunday of Advent, Dec. 2. President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., will concelebrate Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Family, located in the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave., followed by a candlelight procession to Westowne Square, the area between McCormick Hall and the Alumni Memorial Union. The tree-lighting ceremony, led by Father Pilarz, will take place at 9:15 p.m., followed by a reception in the Alumni Memorial Union, Monaghan Ballroom.

Additional events include the following:

•    The Marquette Chorus and Liturgical Choir will perform Christmas songs and faculty will read Christmas readings at the annual “Lessons and Carols Concert” Friday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.

•    The Music Area Holiday Concert, featuring the Marquette Jazz Ensembles, Gospel Choir, Marquette Chorus, Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will take place Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. in the Varsity Theatre, 1324 W. Wisconsin Ave.

•    The Marquette Faculty/Staff Chorale will present its annual Christmas concert Thursday, Dec. 6, at 11:30 a.m. in the Varsity Theatre, 1324 W. Wisconsin Ave.  The Faculty/Staff Chorale will perform Renaissance, modern and traditional carols.

•    The Naturals, Marquette’s all-male a cappella group, will perform their annual Christmas concert Friday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. in Todd Wehr Chemistry, room 100, located at 535 N. 14th St.

All events are free and open to the public; there are no tickets or reservations required.
