Marquette University College of Nursing opens neighborhood health center

In another example of serving the health needs of Milwaukee residents, the Marquette University College of Nursing has recently opened the Marquette Neighborhood Health Center, located at 1834 W. Wisconsin Ave.  The health center serves children, adults and families while providing clinical experience for faculty-supervised graduate and undergraduate students.

“We know that there are significant health care needs in our immediate Marquette neighborhood,” says Margaret Berner, MSN, CNM, APNP, nurse manager of the Marquette Neighborhood Health Center.  “From children who need school physicals, adults with chronic conditions like diabetes or even Marquette employees with a sinus infection, we are a front-line resource for those around us.”

The health center is staffed by nurse practitioners, who are advanced practice nurses with licensure to prescribe medications. They provide a wide range of primary health care services with a focus on yearly check-ups, well-child care, immunizations, screenings, laboratory tests and management of chronic illnesses. In addition, services such as throat cultures, treatment for infections, burns, sprains and strains (that do not require an emergency room visit) can often be handled at the center.

“As nurses we are called to care for the health of others.  As Marquette faculty, staff and students, we have the unique opportunity to meet critical health care needs in our own immediate community,” says Berner.

The Marquette Neighborhood Health Center is currently accepting new patients. Call (414) 933-9100 for more information about eligible insurance carriers or to schedule an appointment.
