Search/Finding Aids

  • USPTO Patent Grants and Patent Applications databases
    Full text searchable from 1976-present.  Patents issued between 1790 and 1976 are searchable only by patent number and current US classifications.  Please read Notices and use the Help links for instructions
  • Google Patent Search - beta
    Covers the entire collection of patents made available by the USPTO—from patents issued in the 1790s through those issued in the middle of 2006. Does not currently include patent applications, international patents, or U.S. patents issued over the last few months.  Google has converted the entire image database of U.S. patents into a format that’s easy to search and can be downloaded/printed in PDF format. As with Google Web Search, results are ranked according to their relevance to a given search query.  Results can be resorted by date.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - Legal Research
    Search for patents from 1971-present by keyword, patent number or classification.  View full text of patent in html format; drawings/graphics described but not included.

Obtaining Copies of Patents

  • USPTO databases have free full text (html, without graphics) of all patents from 1976- present.  Free page image of patents from 1790-present is available in TIFF format; requires a special browser plug-in to view.  Please see USPTO image instructions.
  • Google Patent Search - Beta  (see description above)
  • www.pat2pdf.org - search by US patent number, fetches the pages of patent document from the USPTO patent database and converts them into a single PDF file.  Free.
  • FreePatentsOnline - search US patents from number 4000000 to present by keyword, patent number, or browse by number.  Pdf version available for printing.  Free. 
  • Milwaukee Public Library.  MPL Central Library is a Patent and Trademark Depository Library (PTDL) with copies of all U.S. patents from 1790-present.

  • Chemical Abstracts via SciFinder Scholar - 1947-present. Search by chemical substances, natural product, reactions, topic, author, patent number, CAS Registry Number, chemical name, structure, and formula. Full text of patents not included.  Restricted to MU Faculty and Students.
  • DNA Patent Database - allows free public access to the full text and analysis of all
    DNA patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO)
