COLLECTION NEWS

MARQCAT go buttonMARQCAT's New Look: The campus libraries have installed a new Google-like keyword search interface for the catalog. The new option's key innovation is its added ability to retrieve items in the libraries' digital collections. The new platform augments, but not entirely replaces the familiar MARQCAT database. Some other notable "look and feel" features include smarter searches, visual presentation of limiters and related topics, cover graphics, recently added items, and links to the Quick Search article search feature.  More...

New databases: More than two dozen new electronic subscriptions were added since January: Middle Eastern studies, Old English, peace research, Latin American newspapers, and two important collections of primary research materials: the Gerritsen Collection (described below) and Sabin Americana, 1500-1926. Sabin contains over 29,000 books, pamphlets, and serials (6 million pages in full image) about the Americas published throughout the world from 1500 to the early 1900s.  More...

Spotlight on new women's studies digital collection: the Libraries announce the acquisition of the Gerritsen Collection, an important cross-cultural collection of more than 4,700 digitized books, pamphlets, and journals in women's history, spanning four centuries and containing more than two million pages. More...

Browsing Collection moves: the popular browsing collections have moved to the 2nd floor of Raynor. The general browsing collection (view cool new virtual browser) of contemporary books has been joined by the Ciszek Collection of Catholic spirituality and the new Manresa Collection, devoted to Christian diversity and for exploring Christian spiritual life, including vocation, Christian discipleship, and leadership. MARQCAT's New Titles feature provides listings for these collections.

TECHNOLOGY NOTES

A committee planning a redesign of the Libraries' Web site has launched a beta demonstration site. With an objective of improving usability and access, the new site will be tested with a variety of library users over the next four months before an early 2010 launch. Members of the Marquette community are invited to take a test drive and are urged to provide feedback using the forms on each page. Thanks for your help! More...

Laptop users: A summer project made significant improvements in laptop connectivity in the Memorial Library building: new state-of-the-art wireless access devices were added, along with power receptacles and wired data outlets throughout the building, including faculty carrels and the Bridge. Also, laptop users are advised to download new PrintWise drivers from ITS; new "green" printing defaults to double-sided printing.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Photo of Dean WelburnAs a new semester begins for us, I want to share some exciting new things we're doing in Raynor Memorial Libraries in the areas of teaching, learning, and research at our university.  One of the biggest changes you may notice is taking place on our Web site, which is the focus of a planned re-design. Not only is the beta site more visual, but it offers easier access to our virtual resources than ever before...  More...

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS & ARCHIVES

illustrated page from Salzmann collectionA significant collection of rare books owned by the St. Francis Seminary's Salzmann Library is now available within Raynor Library's special collections. A partnership between Marquette and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee led to the transfer of 900 volumes. The arrangement offers advanced scholars more convenient access, and an environmentally-controlled vault in the Department of Special Collections and Archives provides improved security for these cultural and intellectual treasures. In a November 4th presentation, Dr. Wanda Zemler-Cizewski of the Department of Theology will describe some of the collection highlights, which include early (pre-1500) Bibles, canon law, and Jesuitica.  More...

Two doctoral students' research has resulted in Special Collections' acquisition of new materials. Monica Gallamore (History) discovered the existence of diaries, correspondence, and recordings by her subject, mid-20th century singer Hildegard. Lincoln Rice (Theology) was researching the legacy of Catholic African American physician Arthur G. Falls when he learned about an unpublished 600+ page typed memoir. Both discoveries resulted in the acquisition of valuable primary materials that added to existing Marquette collections, and both are now available to researchers in Raynor Library. More...
