Libraries Sponsor Food Drive

Donate non-perishable food itemsApril 2009--In celebration of National Library Week, staff of Raynor Memorial Libraries are hosting a food drive to benefit the Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee.  Drop-off boxes will be available in the lobby of Raynor Library from April 13 (Monday) through Friday, April 24.

Facts on Hunger in Milwaukee:

  • 34% of Milwaukee children live in poverty.
  • 24.4% of all Milwaukee residents live in poverty, making it the seventh poorest city in the country.
  • Median household income in Milwaukee has fallen 14.7% between 2000 and 2006.
  • The Hunger Task Force distributes more than 8,000,000 pounds of free food each year to area food banks.
  • More facts from the Hunger Task Force

What is needed?  Any non-perishable food, but breakfast cereals of any kind, oatmeal, breakfast bars, canned protein, such as tuna, are especially needed.  Other preferred items include canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned or dry soups, and canned pasta.

Help us celebrate library power and help the less fortunate around us.  Each medium-sized box of food we collect (average weight 35 pounds) feeds about 15 people.  The more we collect, the greater the difference we can make for children, seniors, and the working poor in our community.  The food drive is sponsored by Raynor Memorial Libraries, the Academic Librarians' Assembly, and the Library Support Staff Association.
