August 2009—The Libraries have added the following new online subscriptions and digital texts since January.  Most are new acquisitions, while several represent a significant enhancement to ongoing subscriptions.  All are available to Marquette users from any campus network location, as well as from off-campus.  If you have questions, please drop by the Information Desk or use other AskUs! services.

New Databases

Chicago Tribune 1849-1929 Archive of the full text (and full image) of the daily newspaper from 1849-1986.

CoPA, Commercial Pattern Archive provides a unique tool for researchers and theatrical designers to recreate or date clothing from 1868 to 2000. Note: requires login.

COS provides more than 25,000 private and federal funding sources across multiple disciplines (physical sciences, social sciences, life sciences, health & medicine, arts & humanities). The database also facilitates discovery of experts and collaborators. Note: To use COS resources users must first create a profile and login using an on-campus computer; access from off-campus is based on the created login credentials.

Credo Reference Online reference library providing full-text articles from 100+ encyclopedias and dictionaries in a variety of subject areas: psychology, history, literature, business, medicine, law, technology, philosophy, art, popular culture, etc.  Keyword searching can be performed in individual titles, titles grouped by subject, or within the entire Credo Reference 100 collection.

Dictionary of Old English, A to G Defines the vocabulary of the first six centuries (600-1150 A.D.) of the English language.

Dynamed is a clinical reference tool designed primarily for point-of-care use by health care providers.  It provides information on over 3,000 topics with content updated daily.  It can be searched on or off campus and is deliverable via a hand-held device.

Encyclopedia of African American History, 1896 to the Present Comprehensive survey of African American history and life since 1896 with entries including both topical and biographical subjects.

Encyclopedia of Archaeology Encompasses all aspects of archaeology, including the nature and diversity of archaeology as a scientific discipline, the practice of archaeology, archaeology in the everyday world, and the future of the discipline.

Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment Covering the “long” Enlightenment, from the rise of Descartes' disciples in 1670 to the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in 1815; coverage includes not only Western Europe but also North America, Brazil, and Iberian, Russian, Jewish, and Eastern European cultures.

Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics is an authoritative source of information about any particular aspect of linguistics or its applications. Included in this online edition are over 7,500,000 words, audio files, list of commonly used abbreviations, 200 language maps, and a list of languages of the world.

Encyclopedia of Statistics in Behavioral Science provides coverage of current statistical methods for applied psychology, sociology, market research, consumer behavior, management science, decision making and human resource management.

Environment Complete Contains the full text for more than 750 journals in the areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more.

Gerritsen Collection: Women’s History Online 1543-1945 is a 2-million plus page international library containing almost 5,000 books and several hundred full-text periodicals reflecting the revolution of a feminist consciousness and the movement for women’s rights. Materials span four centuries and 15 languages. Individual items are included and linked in MARQCAT.

Knovel Technical Books Covering all aspects of engineering, Knovel includes approximately 2,000 full-text reference works and databases.

Latin American Newspapers (from the World Newspaper Archive) includes papers from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico and, when complete, will offer 35 papers with long publishing histories from the 19th and 20th centuries.

LGBT Life with Full Text Contains all of the content available in LGBT Life as well as full text for more than 120 LGBT journals, magazines and regional newspapers, and more than 140 full-text monographs/books.

Middle Eastern & Central Asian Studies Index of research, policy and scholarly discourse on the countries and peoples of the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa covering 1900 and earlier to the present.

Peace Research Abstracts Includes bibliographic citations covering areas related to peace research, including conflict resolution, international affairs, peace psychology, and other areas relevant to the discipline.

Political Science Complete Full text for nearly 400 journals, plus indexing and abstracts for more than 800 journals.  Also includes 180 full-text reference books and monographs and over 28,000 full text conference papers.

RiskMetrics The RiskMetrics Governance Database (part of Wharton Research Data Services) formerly called the IRRC Takeover Defense Database) covers more than 4,000 companies and allows users to identify companies that have poison pills, anti-greenmail, classified boards, golden parachutes, and other devices designed to prevent hostile takeovers and weaken shareholder rights. The RiskMetrics Directors Database provides details on the structure and practices of the boards of directors at approximately 1,500 U.S. companies.

Sabin Americana 1500-1926 Over 32,000 works and 400 full text serials (6 million pages) about the Americas published throughout the world from 1500 to the early 1900's.  Included are books, pamphlets, serials and other documents providing original accounts of exploration, trade, colonialism, slavery and abolition, the western movement, Native Americans, military actions and more.

Badgerlink Changes

The Wisconsin Department of Instruction’s contract for databases, which are open to all residents of the state, brings a wealth of new resources--some expanded versions of previously held titles and some new additions. Badgerlink databases are included in the A-Z listing and may be accessed from off-campus.

Academic Search Complete (enhanced full text coverage, now over 7,000 journals covering the social sciences, humanities, general science, multi-cultural studies, education and much more.  Coverage varies by publication, some full-text PDFs from 1985 to present.

Auto Repair Reference Center Auto repair manuals from 1945 to the present.

Book Collection: Nonfiction Three nonfiction collections are included: elementary (1,290 titles), middle (3,089 titles), and high school (2,448 titles).

Business Source Premier (updated version of database, now including full text from over 2,150 journals covering business, management, economics, banking, finance, accounting and much more.  In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 1,570 journals.  Full text backfiles go as far back as January of 1990, while indexing and abstract backfiles go as far back as January of 1984.

Consumer Health Complete Includes 570 full text journals and over 200 health related reference books.  Topics include: aging, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's men's, and women's health.

Educational Administration Abstracts Bibliographic records related to educational administration, including educational leadership, management, research, and other areas relevant to the discipline.

Education Research Complete Indexing and abstracts for more than 2,150 journals, as well as full text for nearly 1,200 journals covering such topics as early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing.

ERICEBSCO’s version of the comprehensive database; it indexes and provides abstracts for journal articles and specialized reports in educational fields such as early childhood education and development, perception and cognition, and testing. 1966 to present.

History Reference Center Covering all aspects of history, this resource offers full text access to 2,500 reference books, 170 journals, plus biographies and many historical documents, photos, maps, and videos.

Humanities International Complete Upgrade of Humanities International, now including full text content for over 1,000 journals related to literary, scholarly and creative thought.

Literary Reference Center is a comprehensive source of reference on literature—author biographies and interviews, plot summaries, critical essays, reference books, and book reviews.

NoveList NoveList K8 Guides to over 155,000 works of fiction.  Searchable by author, title, series title and plot and searches can be limited by age group.  Also includes award winners, discussion guides, and recommended reading.

Science Reference Center Covers biology, chemistry, earth & space science, environmental science, health & medicine, history of science, life science, physics, science & society, science as inquiry, scientists, technology and wildlife with full text for 181 periodicals, 595 reference books, and 23 encyclopedias.

Enhancements of Ongoing Subscriptions

CQ Researcher Archive 1960–90 Backfile added to this full text database on controversial current events and social, political, economic, and international issues.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) (collection II) Significant, full text added for more than 45,000 books

JSTOR Ireland Collection added: 20 key journal archives for Irish Studies.

Lippiincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) Nursing & Health Professions Premier Collection.  Provides access to 64 nursing journals of which 31 are new to the collection. All titles are individually cataloged and accessible via MARQCAT.

Library of Latin Texts (Series B added)

New Catholic Encyclopedia, 2009 Supplement to the 2nd edition (2003).

Periodicals Archive Online (PAO) (Collection VIII) Update including 75 additional journals.

Oxford Music Online has new content, now including three dictionaries and one encyclopedia: The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, and The Encyclopedia of Popular Music.

Oxford Reference Online Added titles, now contains over 175 dictionaries, encyclopedias, and language references.
