Archives Launches New Spotlight Series

Spotlight on Archives graphicOctober 2008--The Department of Special Collections and University Archives has launched a new monthly feature designed to highlight select digital collections. "In the Spotlight" will help members of the university community discover some of the rich holdings within the department.  The Spotlight series is a collaboration of the archivists that will draw on their in-depth knowledge of the various collections.

The inaugural spotlight features presidential campaign visits to Marquette.  In this election season, it is timely to recall that during past decades Marquette University has been a destination for many campaign stops, including speeches and debates.  The spotlight illustrates campus visits as far back as 1956 (Stevenson and Nixon) and 1959 (Kennedy), to the most recent in 2004, when the presidential debate (Kerry, Kucinich, Edwards, Sharpton, and Dean, left to right in photo) was held in Alumni Memorial Union.

The November spotlight will feature Veterans Day with images from the 1918 and 1919 Hilltops.  Future spotlights will draw images from all parts of the collections--manuscripts, university archives, and rare books.  Presently consisting of only the presidential campaign spotlight, the features together will be accessible as one of the digital collections.  Connect to Marquette Digital Collections.

Questions about this collection can be directed to Matt Blessing, Special Collections and University Archives.
