New E-Resources

August 2008—The Libraries have added the following new online subscriptions and digital texts since January 2008.  Most are new acquisitions, while several represent a change of format or significant enhancement to ongoing subscriptions. All are available to Marquette users from any campus network location, as well as from off-campus.  If you have questions, please drop by the Information Desk or use other AskUs! services.

New Databases

17th & 18th Century Burney Newspaper Collection represents the largest and most comprehensive collection of early English news media.  The digital collection totals almost one million pages and contains approximately 1,270 titles and is fully text-searchable.

America's Historical Newspapers allows users to search primarily 18th and 19th century newspapers from across the country. Raynor Memorial Libraries acquired Series 1 and 3.  Series 1 covers the years 1690-1876 and provides images and full-text content access to historic newspapers listed in Clarence Brigham's authoritative bibliography, History and Bibliography of American Newspapers. Series 3 covers the years 1829-1922 and focuses on the 19th- and 20th-century newspapers including Civil War, Reconstruction, the Progressive Era, and beyond.  This collection is text-searchable and allows users to view articles as pdfs.

Berkeley Electronic Press "Bepress" Journals provides 40+ full text, peer-reviewed journals covering economics, business, marketing, law, political science, policy, international studies, health, medicine, science and technology.

The Cambridge Companions to Literature and Classics offers over 1,500 comprehensive essays on major authors, periods and genres.  Writers are placed in literary and historical context; their major works are analyzed, either in separate chapters or grouped according to theme, and their influence on later writers assessed.  Periods of English literature and literary genres are examined, giving vital contextual information about political, social, religious and artistic relationships.  Classical Civilization examines key periods and aspects of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome.

The Cambridge Companions to Philosophy, Religion, and Culture contains 1,000+ essays addressing topics and figures ranging from Plato through Kant to Habermas, and philosophical movements such as the Scottish Enlightenment and German Idealism.

CQ Congress Collection is a research and reference tool for analyzing the history and development, legislation, powers, and personalities of the U.S. Congress.  Beginning with the First Continental Congress to present day, data is presented with nonbiased commentary and includes vital biographical and voting data for members of Congress, legislative information organized by topic, key votes, legislative analysis, interest group scores of members, encyclopedic information on Congress, and Supreme Court case summaries relating to the structure and powers of Congress.

CQ Voting and Elections Collection integrates a wealth of data, authoritative analyses, concise explanations, and historical material on the American voter, major and minor political parties, campaigns and elections, and historical and modern races for Congress, the presidency, and governorships.

Lexi-Comp Online for Dentistry is a complete resource for dental professionals, including drug information, patient information leaflets, dental office practice, and clinical dentistry.

Mergent WebReports is a database that provides access to a vast archive of corporate and industry related documents.  WebReports includes more than 180,000 documents covering over 100+ countries and industries.  The corporate manuals (originally published by Moody's) range back to the early 1900s and contain corporate histories and financial statements.

Oxford Reference Online Premium offers over 175 fully-indexed, cross-searchable dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press, including detailed information across a broad subject range from titles in the Oxford Companions Series.  The Premium Collection is updated regularly with new titles, new editions, new entries, full-color maps and illustrations, timelines, Web links, and bibliographies.

Oxford Scholarship Online - Philosophy contains over 500 full-text books covering core philosophical areas such as aesthetics, history of philosophy, logic, metaphysics and many more.  Available works through the twentieth century and beyond, including eminent philosophers and leading scholars, such as: J. L. Austin, Donald Davidson, Michael Dummett, Jerry A. Fodor, Philippa Foot, Thomas Nagel, Joseph Raz, P. F. Strawson, Richard Swinburne and Christopher Peacocke.

Notable Enhancements

America History and Life and Historical Abstracts have moved to a new EBSCO platform.  See more about the all-new features for these important databases.

ATLA Religion Database + ATLA Serials has changed platforms to EBSCO and now includes full text of 100+ journals.  Topics include: Biblical studies, world religions, Church history, and religious perspectives on social issues,1949 to present.&nbps; One new feature for biblical scholars is the ability to include, in a single search, other relevant databases, such as Old Testament Abstracts and New Testament Abstracts--from the ATLA main screen, select "Choose Databases," and click on each database title.

BadgerLink databases are provided free-of-charge for Wisconsin residents; easy links to most titles are included on Raynor Memorial Libraries' A-Z database listing.  However, BadgerLink has unveiled a new feature that allows searching across multiple databases in a single search.  Use the Advanced Search mode and check the databases to include.  When off-campus, members of the Marquette community are advised to use the links from library pages to authenticate themselves as MU users.

EBSCO's Website has a new, user-friendly design, EBSCOhost 2.0.  Some of the features offered to users are newly enhanced basic and advanced search screen, result lists with user-customization features, personalized folder options, a graphically rich visual search, and improved bibliographic functionality.  The entry screen for all EBSCO databases allows users to search multiple databases in a single search by clicking the boxes next to desired titles.

ERIC unveiled a new look, helps, and tutorial upgrades with improved navigation, expanded help and training, and a lighter visual design.  ERIC has also added more than 130 education-focused journals to their collection.

Grove Art Online and Grove Music Online have now changed to Oxford Art Online and Oxford Music Online.  The Oxford Art Online provides access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art and The Oxford Companion to Western Art.  The Oxford Music Online database includes three dictionaries: The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.; The New Grove Dictionary of Opera; and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online have added Russian and Chinese with over 4 million words, translations, and phrases.  Native speaker audio pronunciation for all languages has also been added to the site, allowing users to hear how words actually sound with correct stress and intonation.

Project Muse has a new Web site design and easier navigation. Some of the changes are: enhancing navigation across MUSE content with expanded links to related content, both by the same author or in the same subject area, implementing a search specifically for the informational pages, and a more user-friendly design with additional search limiters available to users.

RefWorks bibliography manager launched Write-n-Cite III for Windows, an optional, downloadable plug-in for document formatting.  Download the upgrade from within your RefWorks account by selecting Tools, then Write-n-Cite.
