Libraries Announce Participation in

January 2008—Marquette University is now a member of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy International Association, joining many prestigious philosophy PhD degree-granting universities such as Cornell, Duke, Georgetown, and Harvard.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP) was designed so that each entry is maintained and kept up to date by an expert or group of experts in the field.  All entries and substantive updates are refereed by the members of a distinguished editorial board before they are made public.  The association’s reference work maintains academic standards while evolving and adapting in response to new research.  This scholarly dynamic reference work differs in this way from the traditional academic journal model.  Marquette professor of philosophy Richard Taylor is the subject editor for Arabic and Islamic Philosophy.  In addition, philosophy professors Lawrence Nolan and Michael Wreen are contributing authors.

Users may browse SEP’s table of contents or search by article title, author, or keyword.  The Table of Contents lists entries that are published or assigned.  The Projected Table of Contents also lists entries that are currently unassigned but nevertheless projected.  A "What's New" feature lists new and revised entries during the past three months.

To make the citation process easier, each entry has a "Cite this entry" link at the top of the left panel.  Each citation page has specific information for that entry and also shows the article’s complete archival history.  The archives are updated on a quarterly basis.  Content of these fixed editions is neither updated nor modified in any way once the archive is made.
