National Institutes of Health and Faculty Publications

April 2008--President Bush's 2008 budget package included a provision for public access publishing that is in effect as of April 7, 2008.  Under the appropriation (PL 110-161), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has mandated that all NIH-funded researchers must deposit their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts or published articles arising from NIH-funded research in PubMed Central.

Overview: "The NIH Public Access Policy ensures that the public has access to the published results of NIH funded research...The policy requires that these articles be accessible to the public on PubMed Central to help advance science and improve human health."  See more on NIH pages...

To help answer questions about the new NIH requirements, the Libraries are offering two sessions open to all affected faculty and graduate students:

"The NIH Public Access Policy: Copyright, Submissions,
and How the Libraries Can Help."

Librarians will review the NIH requirements for principal investigators and answer questions related to these issues.

April 29 (Tuesday) 9:00 a.m.   and    April 30 (Wednesday) 11:00 a.m.

The sessions will be held in Raynor's Beaumier Conference Center Room A; invitations will be sent to identified NIH grant recipients; however others are welcome.  Call 288-5213 or e-mail Jay Kirk, Head of Collection Development for details.

The NIH has already posted extensive FAQs, including to whom the policy applies, journals that submit to PubMed Central, what is PubMed Central, how to comply with the policy, and how to submit to PubMed Central using the NIH Manuscript Submission system.

Questions about this issue may be addressed to Jay Kirk, Coordinator of Collection Development at 288-5213.
