New Digital Collection Highlights McCarthy Era |
April 2008--Raynor Memorial Libraries' newest digital collection, Senator Joe McCarthy: Audio Excerpts, 1950-1954, provides access to audio files of public remarks delivered by Senator McCarthy during his controversial campaign to remove communists and communist sympathizers from government. |
Senator Joe McCarthy: Audio Excerpts, 1950-1954, includes 35 streaming audio files made from original analog tape recordings in the Joseph R. McCarthy Papers at Marquette University. Listeners can hear about topics McCarthy commonly discussed in his speeches, such as his views about the United States and the war against communism, and his denunciation of several prominent individuals. Senator McCarthy remains a controversial figure, and the Marquette University Archives has made a conscious effort in this collection to provide a fair representation of the historical record. Users of the digital collection, built with CONTENTdm software, may search by keyword or browse by year. Users may also browse all excerpts (accompanied by a detailed description) and conduct advanced keyword searches in selected fields. A written transcript of each excerpt is available through the site, and these transcripts are searchable through the keyword search. The audio excerpts, which vary in length from 22 seconds to over 10 minutes, require QuickTime player to listen to them. A free download of QuickTime is available here. This digital initiative is the latest of nine Marquette University digital collections. Other collections include The Indian Sentinel, 1902-1962, Tommy G. Thompson, and Hilltop Yearbooks, 1915-1996.
