Libraries Announce addition of Chronicle

November 2007—The Libraries are pleased to announce The Chronicle of Higher Education is now available online.  During a month-long trial, the Libraries' Collection Development Advisory Committee received a flood of positive responses and made the decision to institute a subscription.  Head of Collection Development Jay Kirk said, "Now the entire campus community will have online access to The Chronicle.  The cost per user will go down.  Plus, as we decrease print subscriptions, there is the added benefit of saving paper and printing materials."

Campus members who evaluated The Chronicle during the trial said:

"I would love to have access to The Chronicle online."

"I would be happy to cancel my personal subscription."

"Particularly helpful to younger staff who cannot afford personal subscriptions."

"I teach a course in which I would refer students regularly."

All text of the current issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education, which prints and mails every Friday, is posted the following Monday morning.  Features include a complete, searchable archive back to September 1989; Job postings--thousands of faculty and administrative positions--updated daily, plus other career services, such as employer profiles, career advice and counseling, and salary data; Commentary and essays from the weekly magazine, The Chronicle Review.  The Chronicle's guide to the site provides an overview of all the available features.

Faculty members and administrators are encouraged to explore some of the features that are exclusive to the digital edition, such as free e-mail news.  "Academe Today," a popular daily briefing with links to full stories, is available to anyone once they have created a free account.  Other targeted e-mail alerts include "Job Alerts in Higher Education," The Wired Campus Newsletter," "The Chronicle Review Newsletter," and "Breaking-News Extra."  Current news blogs range from discussions of issues in the presidential race, to fundraising, and campus architecture, to daily reports on education-technology news.  Data from the annual Almanac and other special reports are in easy-to-search databases; and article "extras" appear as podcasts, slide shows, and videos.

The Chronicle is available to Marquette users from any campus network location, as well as from off campus.  From campus computers, go to http://chronicle.com and bookmark the page.  From off-campus, users will need to use the link provided via MARQCAT or the Web site's list of databases, which use the proxy server address: Connect to The Chronicle of Higher Education

For questions about the Chronicle online, please call or e-mail Jay Kirk (288-5213), Head of Collection Development.
