Series 5 Scope and Content

The audiovisual materials are further divided into two series: Gubernatorial and Health and Human Services (HHS).

Series 5.1, Gubernatorial, 1985-2001, undated, contains analog audiocassettes (Series 5.1.1) and videocassettes (Series 5.1.2) chronicling events from Thompson's governorship. Materials are arranged chronologically. All audiocassette recordings are also available in digital format (.wav). The contents of selected videocassettes have been transferred to DVD format and currently form their own sub-series (Series 5.1.3). Some videocassettes and most DVDs contain multiple segments. Events depicted, or recorded, include speeches, interviews, press conferences, campaign appearances, and news reports about Thompson's policy initiatives.

Most of the videocassettes in boxes 30-34 were donated in 2005 by James R. Klauser, who served as chairman of Thompson's four gubernatorial election campaign committees. Some of the videocassettes contain political focus group sessions conducted with groups of private citizens: there will be no duplication or public screening of these sessions without consent of the copyright holder. These focus groups are clearly marked on the inventory.

Series 5.2, Health and Human Services, 2001-2005, contains videocassettes (Series 5.2.1) depicting Thompson's tenure as HHS Secretary. They are arranged chronologically. The contents of selected videocassettes have been transferred to DVD (Series 5.2.2). Events depicted include press conferences in the HHS Auditorium, public speeches, congressional testimonies, and interviews on television news programs.
