Listservs allow list owners and subscribers to maintain their lists using e-mail or the web interface.

Email commands for list subscribers

  • To do this:

    Enter this in the body of the email message.
    Replace [list] below with your listname
    e.g., LS-TEST

    Remove yourself from a list
    • unsubscribe [list] firstname lastname
    • e.g., unsubscribe LS-TEST Jane Doe
    Subscribe to a list

    This may send an email to
    the list owner(s) with a request
    for you to be added
    • subscribe [list] firstname lastname
    • e.g., subscribe LS-TEST Jane Doe
    Receive a copy of mail you send to the list (if you have permission to send to the list)
    • set [list] repro
    • e.g., set LS-TEST repro


Email commands for list owners to administer the list

To do this:

Enter this in the body of the email message.
Replace [list] below with the list name
e.g., LS-TEST

  • add [list] email firstname lastname
  • e.g., add LS-TEST jane.doe@marquette.edu Jane Doe

Silently add user

quiet add [list] email firstname lastname

Remove user

delete [list] email

Silently remove user

quiet delete [list] email

Check members of your list

review [list]

Check for member by partial email

  • scan [list] keyword
  • e.g., scan LS-TEST outlook.com will return any address containing "outlook.com"

List members by date joined

review [list] by date
