Lent is a time of retreat for the Church and it is especially a sacred time for the catechumens and candidates for the Easter Sacraments. In the A cycle of readings, the Church proposes special readings for the catechumens and candidates to use for their Lenten Prayer. These readings are suggested as ways of getting a deeper insight into the person of Jesus Christ, gain a rich understanding of the graces of baptism and help one to understand what it is to be a disciple of the Risen Lord.

For each of the Sundays of Lent, an introduction to the Gospel will be provided, the text of the Gospel itself, the way the Church reflects on the Scripture in the Preface of the Mass and finally reflection questions to help shape prayer and reflection.
