What Can You Do With a Major in Speech Pathology and Audiology?

Speech pathology and audiology major careers and jobs

What can you do with a major in speech pathology and audiology? There are so many possibilities in the growing communication disorders field. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists work in public and private schools, hospitals, clinics, developmental centers, and rehabilitation centers — but a master's degree is required to practice in any of these areas. After earning an undergraduate major in speech pathology and audiology, most of our students go on to graduate school (nearly half earn their master's degrees from Marquette). During the past few years, our students have been admitted at a rate of about 90 percent to some of the top graduate programs, including:

  • George Washington University
  • Marquette University
  • Michigan State University
  • Northwestern University
  • Old Dominion University
  • St. Louis University
  • Syracuse University
  • University of Hawaii
  • University of Iowa
  • University of Kansas

Jobs for speech pathology and audiology majors

Speech pathology and audiology majors are in demand. Jobs for speech-language pathologists are expected to grow by 19 percent through 2018, faster than the average for other occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Candidates who can speak Spanish are particularly sought after, which is good news for those who earn Marquette's Bilingual English-Spanish Certificate in speech pathology — the only one of its kind in the Midwest. The bureau also predicts an even greater demand for audiologists — job prospects in that field are expected to grow by 25 percent through 2018.
