National Science Foundation grant to train STEM teachers at Marquette

Marquette’s Opus College of Engineering and College of Education have received a $1.2 million National Science Foundation grant to develop a 14-month master’s program that will attract and retain new science, technology, engineering and math teachers. The accelerated program, which will start in summer 2018 and is now accepting applications, targets individuals with STEM-related bachelor’s degrees not currently in the teaching profession.

The interdisciplinary teacher training will include a co-op educational model, based off the Opus College of Engineering’s successful model, where students immediately receive extensive hands-on, career-related work experience to develop professionally and academically, including a field site internship in the first summer. Marquette aims to graduate 28 students over the course of the five-year grant.

Dr. Barbara Silver-Thorn, associate professor of biomedical engineering, is the lead engineering faculty contributor for the grant.

“As we reach deeper into primary and secondary education to attract students to STEM careers, it is critical to have teachers who bring both experience and passion for the field,” said Dr. Kristina Ropella, Opus Dean of the Opus College of Engineering. “This unique program creates a new bridge for STEM professionals to become licensed and experienced teachers.”

Marquette alum shares life-changing power of Opus Scholars programs

Tyler Grymkoski, Eng ’17, shared his path to an engineering degree from Marquette at the Opus Scholars 10th Anniversary Banquet. While financially unable to attend Marquette as a freshman, Grymkoski knew Marquette was the right fit for him, and with hard work and perseverance, he was able to enter the university as an Opus Scholar his sophomore year.

Throughout his time as an Opus Scholar, Grymkoski credits the guidance he received and relationships he formed in helping him to graduate as the 7th Opus Scholar this May. Thanks to his internship with Opus Design Build while in school, Grymkoski has accepted a full-time position with the firm in Denver.

Faculty, staff awarded first Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network grant

Dr. Kristina Ropella, Opus Dean; Dr. Jay Goldberg, clinical professor and director of health care technologies management; Laura Lindemann, director of industry relations; and Lisa Bosman, student-centered active learning educator in entrepreneurship, have been awarded a $742,000 grant from the Kern Foundation for the project “Adding Value to KEEN while Building a Sustainable Entrepreneurial Ecosystem at Marquette University.” The new grant will have a significant focus on introducing the entrepreneurial mindset into industry co-op and internship experiences.

Faculty honored at Distinguished Scholars Reception

Dr. John Borg, professor of mechanical engineering, received the Lawrence G. Haggerty Faculty Award for Research Excellence for his scholarship. His research has been published in more than 25 refereed journals and numerous government reports, and has received significant funding from the Departments of Energy and Defense.

Dr. Brooke Mayer, assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, received the Way Klinger Young Scholar Award, which supports promising young scholars in critical stages of their careers with funding of $2,000 in operating costs. It also covers up to 50 percent of salary to afford the recipient a one-semester sabbatical. Congratulations, Drs. Borg and Mayer!

• SAE Baja Racing Team brings studies to life on the racetrack: Marquette’s Society of Automotive Engineers Baja Racing Team is bringing their work to life in designing and racing a vehicle to compete against other engineering schools across the country. From concept to prototype to CAD software to computer-aided design, the SAE Baja Racing Team takes their designs and turns them into reality — a true example of the engineering process from start to finish. • Cole Blazer, Eng ’18, named Big East’s Most Outstanding Player: While helping the Marquette Men’s Lacrosse team claim another Big East crown, goaltender Cole Blazer finished with 11 saves and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. More from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

• Marquette’s Visualization Lab hosts production of Macbeth: Local theater companies have discovered the power of Marquette’s Visualization Lab, or MARVL, to bring alive — or virtually alive — almost anything they can imagine. The latest in a series of theatre productions staged in the lab was Umbrella Group Theatre’s Macbeth. More from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and WUWM-Radio (89.9 FM).

• John LaDisa, associate professor of biomedical engineering, discussed virtual reality workouts that stemmed from research at Marquette’s Visualization Lab: “Instead of running a cycling class perhaps in Whitefish Bay in February in the snow, you’ll be riding through a Hawaiian roadside synchronized going up a hill with the instructor telling us to go up a hill,” he said. Engineering Student Council revitalized, names 2017–18 Executive Board

Throughout the spring 2017 semester, a five-member student board and two student committees were formed within the college to help revitalize the Engineering Student Council as a way to build affinity between students, student organizations, faculty and staff. As they began work to redevelop the ESC, the group brought back Engineering Ball, a long-standing tradition of the college. Over 120 students spent the evening dancing and celebrating the year’s accomplishments, with special appearances by Dr. Kristina Ropella, Opus Dean, and Dr. Mark Federle, Associate Dean.

To continue the group’s momentum into the new year, students elected their peers to the 2017-18 ESC Executive Board. The ESC is working this summer to develop goals and action plans to best serve the college community in the year ahead. Congratulations to the following students on their election to the board:

Student human powered vehicle bike team places at national competition

The Marquette Human Powered Vehicle bike team took fourth place in the endurance race and sixth place out of 45 total teams at the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, held in Cookeville, Tennessee, in April. The first team for the university since 2006, the group also had the best finish of all first-year teams. Congratulations!

New Program for Students: Bridge to Business for Engineers – Sponsored by Rexnord

In a unique collaboration between Marquette University’s Opus College of Engineering and College of Business Administration and Milwaukee-based manufacturer Rexnord, the Bridge to Business Program provides early career engineers with business fundamentals to give a better understanding and appreciation of the business enterprise. This immersive, 14-day experience exposes participants to an integrated curriculum that models the synergy between technical and business roles and responsibilities. A custom-designed project allows students to apply what they have learned about business disciplines in an engineering-related setting.

Faculty from both colleges, along with the local business community, have developed a curriculum that focuses on the key touch points between engineers and other functions with organizations, helping participants examine and learn how to become more effective in their functional role across the organization. Bridge to Business is made possible through a generous corporate gift from Rexnord Corporation.

Key program subjects include: capital budgets, supply chain management, Lean/Six Sigma, team building, pricing, project management, cost accounting, financial statements, information technology, strategy, marketing channels, sales and voice of the customer.
