A rubric is an assessment tool for communicating expectations of quality. A rubric is a set of criteria and standards typically linked to learning objectives that is used to assess or communicate about product, performance, or process tasks. Because the criteria are public, a rubric allows teachers and students alike to evaluate criteria, which can be complex and subjective.
The Center for Teaching and Learning follows course design standards established by Quality Matters, an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting effective online learning. The Quality Matters rubric provides a set of nationally recognized standards developed by a consortium of experienced online instructors and online learning experts from multiple institutions.
