    Since 1961, more than 187,000 volunteers have served in 139 countries in the Peace Corps, working in such diverse fields as education, health, HIV/AIDS education and awareness, information technology, business development, the environment, and agriculture. The goal of the Peace Corps is to provide education and technical training to citizens of other countries while promoting cross-cultural exchange. The Peace Corps is a federal government agency.

    You may submit an application online at www.peacecorps.gov or request a paper copy by calling 800.424.8580, option 1, and dialing 0.  The application process can take from six to twelve months and applications are accepted throughout the year; you may apply up to 12 months prior to your earliest date of availability.

    To be eligible for service, one must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, and willing to spend 27 months in training and service abroad. Opportunities are available for those with a combination of job experience and education, though some opportunities require a four-year degree.
