Top 10 Resume Writing Blunders to Avoid
10. TOO LONG! The resume of a new graduate should—with very few exceptions—be limited to one page in length.
9. NO DEGREE! Always write out the degree you will be receiving in the “Education” section. For example, “Bachelor of Arts in Psychology”.
8. TOO WORDY! A good resume is a concise resume. Use bulleted action word statements to describe your experiences and stay away from personal pronouns (I, me, my, etc.).
7. USE OF A TEMPLATE! Fight the urge—really. There are so many reasons why you should never use a template.
6. NO OBJECTIVE! Employers often receive hundreds of resumes for a variety of positions—do you really want them try and guess what job you are applying for?
5. INAPPROPRIATE E-MAIL ADDRESS! Everything included on your resume must be professional, so no cutesy or otherwise inappropriate email addresses in your contact information.
4. POOR CHOICE OF FONT! Usually using one font is best (sometimes two are okay). Also, don’t size your font too small—for reference, Times New Roman in 11 point is small enough.
3. NO DATES OR LOCATIONS! Always include dates and locations (city, state) of all jobs and education. It is also nice to include dates for other listed achievements.
2. NO BULLETS! Employers spend approximately 20-30 seconds skimming your resume, so it will benefit you to make your resume as reader-friendly as possible. Bullets with action words are always better than a block paragraph of information.
And the #1 Resume Writing Blunder to Avoid…
1. TYPOS! You MUST re-read your resume and NOT rely on spell check (did you know spell check does not catch typos of words that are in all CAPS?). Then, you should have one or more other people read it over, too.
