Are you wondering if a certain career field is right for you?
Try an informational interview!!!
The purpose of an informational interview is to obtain information, not to ask for a job. In an informational interview, your goal is to learn about a field and make decisions as to whether it is a viable career for you.
Be prepared to ask specific questions. Your objective is to learn as much as you can. To accomplish this in as short a time as possible, prepare a written list of questions. Ask good questions, get full information, and you will be able to make a better decision as to whether or not to pursue a particular field as a career possibility.
Whatever your decision, be sure to send a thank you to the person you interviewed—don’t forget, they are a part of your career network now!
Here are some suggested questions to ask during a career information interview:
- In your current position, what do you do in a typical day?
- What are the most interesting aspects of your job?
- What part of your work do you consider dull or repetitious?
- What percentage of your time do you devote to such duties?
- In your work, do you have opportunities to interact with people from diverse backgrounds?
- What were the jobs you had which led to this one?

Dear Dot,
I'm a graduating senior who is a little nervous about the world beyond college. I recently discovered that I really love the marketing field. I quickly added on a marketing minor before graduation. My major is in Broadcast and Electronic Communications but I really want to find a job in marketing. I was wondering if not having marketing as my major will hurt my chances in obtaining a marketing position. If so, what do you recommend I should do? Thanks!
Erica M.
