JOB SEARCH TECHNIQUES
Know Yourself
Interests: What do you like to do?
Skills: What can you offer an employer?
Values: What is important to you?
Preferences: What do you want your job to “look like”?
Define your Criteria
Identify FIVE things you need in a position for it to be satisfying. Use the Decision-Making Worksheet to help you list and prioritize your criteria. Some examples may be…
• Fit with career goals • Distance from home • Training program
• Size of city • Pay vs. cost of living • Opportunity to go back to school
• Fit with co-workers • Room to grow • Setting/environment
Perfect your Job Search Materials
• Based on your resume, would YOU hire you?
• Have your resume critiqued and make necessary changes. See the Resume and
Cover Letter Writing handout for helpful hints and examples.
• Always send a cover letter tailored for each position.
• Practice interviewing using the Interviewing and Frequently Asked Questions handout.
Ways to Find a Job
1. Respond to Position Openings
• Utilize Golden Eagle Search to do a quick search of all public job posting sites across the country at one time.
• Use the internet to do a field specific search. Go to your favorite search engine, type <your field> jobs and see what comes up.
• Use the internet to search for professional associations related to your career field. Go to your favorite search engine, type <your field> association and see what comes up. Look for words such as: career, employment, jobs.
2. Develop a Targeted List of Employers
• Use the Employer Research Listings and Vault web pages to assist you in developing a list of employers.
• Actively pursue employers on your list: regularly check the employers website, use MU Connect to locate MU alumni within the company, try to find a contact within the department you would like to work for.
3. Network with Potential Contacts and Employers
• Career Fairs
• MU Connect
• Professors
• Friends of family/family of friends
• Campus networking events: speaker series, alumni events
• Use the Networking & Mingling handout for more ideas on identifying contacts.
Set Goals and Time Commitments
• Finding a job is a full-time job
• Set weekly goals for working on your job search
Stay Positive
• If you get frustrated with the process, make an appointment with a career counselor for a pep talk and for more job search strategies
• Throw away rejection letters
• Celebrate how far you have come!

Dear Dot,
I have heard a lot of people talking about the importance of networking in your job search, but I am really uncomfortable with the idea of using someone to get a job. What should I do?

www.bigshoesnetwork.com
Founded in 2006, Big Shoes Network, Inc., is the outgrowth of a little idea and a big desire of Jeff & Martha Carrigan to help others. More specifically, they know first-hand how frustrating it can be to land that first job. They know the sheer work involved with keeping your spirits up and continuing to send out cover letters and resumes as you search for that next opportunity. In the end, they’ve been there.
That’s why they started Big Shoes Network. They wanted something a little different. Something far more targeted and relevant. In the employment marketplace, their niche is presenting internships and job opportunities in advertising, communications, graphic design, marketing, marketing research, public relations, resource development, and web design and development. Nearly all of these job openings will be in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota.

An eFair is an entirely internet based job fair. You can use these job fairs to search for permanent jobs, summer, co-op, or internship positions. Employers submit information about their organizations and hiring needs. Candidates browse through or search for positions online and submit resumes directly to employers.
