NEW JOBS AND INTERNSHIPS ARE BEING POSTED EVERY DAY on general job search websites as well as MU Career Manager. Continue to network and take advantage of every opportunity that interests you. Remember to have a good attitude and stay positive. Even if you feel desperate and willing to settle, continue to think about how you portray yourself to an employer. Stay strong and enthusiastic about future job prospects.
For more on continuing your job search read this week's "Ask Dot".
New Job?
So you have landed a new job, congratulations! First impressions continue after the interview, so here are valuable tips to help you succeed in your first year as a professional.
- Don’t underestimate the importance of professional appearance. Wardrobe projects self-esteem and professionalism so appropriate dress can lend credibility to you and your position. Check out the Dress for Success Handout for specific tips.
- Maintain your time management skills. Good time management begins with goal setting. This starts with arriving at work on time. Avoid developing a reputation for being late and arrive five minutes early. Spend time at the beginning of each day planning for what you will need to accomplish: 15 minutes of planning can lead to an additional hour of productivity.
- Develop strong interpersonal skills. You learn by listening, so try to talk 20% of the time and listen for 80%. In your first few days, it may help to write down the names of the people you meet so you can address them by name when you see them again. Be sure to smile and greet coworkers when you see them: positive people are more enjoyable to be around.
- Maintain your connections and networking contacts. It is important to keep in touch with people you have connected with or graduated with. You may be able to continue to serve as resources for one another in the future.
- Demonstrate you are ready for more by excelling in your current assignments. It is exciting to start a new job and hopefully you want to jump in right away. Organizations may have a learning curve, so your initial assignments may seem small. This is far from true! These first assignments can help you to learn about projects or systems within an organization, contextualize later assignments and are a GREAT opportunity to demonstrate that you are ready for more. Learning from the “small stuff” can help prepare you to ask meaningful questions and anticipate needs. Demonstrate initiative by volunteering to help as you see opportunities (be sure to check with your supervisor before starting projects outside your existing assignments).
- Manage your money and remember to give back. Learn about your company’s benefits and sign up for your 401(k) as soon as you can. Always pay your bills on time to protect your credit record. Remember to give back to those less fortunate than you as well. A commitment to service and helping others does not end with graduation: be the difference and continue with these priorities in your professional life.
Congratulations again on your new position! If you would like further information on this topic, check out Your First Year as a Professional.

New Feature on MU CAREER MANAGER!
After you do a search, you can create a new job agent, which is now separate from the saved search feature. The job agent will email you once a job is posted that meets your criteria.
Job Agents - There have been a number of changes to the job agents to make them both more interactive, more intuitive and more accessible:
a. The function for creating a job agent as a student has now been separated out from Save Search to its own function called Create Job Agent on the job search screen. This should make this function more accessible and visible to students.
b. Accessing previously created job agents has been separated out from Saved Searches to its own tab in student activity. This provides an easier place to see existing job agents and allow for providing more intuitive functionality for managing them. It also allows them to be accessible to administrators in the student's activity section.
c. A Disable/Enable function was added to job agents to allow a student to disable a job agent so they would no longer receive the email for it without removing the job agent completely. This way they could easily re-enable it at a later date if it became applicable to them again.
d. The content of the job agent email was changed. It previously included basic data about the new/update jobs matching the agent and just a link to login to the site. This was difficult for students though because to actually interact with any of those job they then had to login and individually search for those jobs or run the saved search. Now, the email contains the number of new/updated jobs for each agent and a link which the student can click on that will take them to the site, let them login and immediately take them to the job results matching that agent, which should make it much easier for students to interact with jobs they have been notified about through an agent. The email also contains a link where a student can disable a job agent directly from the email if they no longer wish to receive it. Lastly, this change from presenting actual job data in the email to a count and a more interactive link should prevent situations in which a student looks at an agent email but by the time they go into the system to look at the jobs the job has perhaps already expired or changed screening criteria and they are confused as to why they can no longer see that job.
