LONG DISTANCE JOB SEARCH
Are you thinking that its time to venture out of Milwaukee? Possibly time to return home to the state that you love or try something new? The following tips will help you out with a long-distance job search. Keep in mind that it can take longer to establish contacts and find positions in another state but sometimes being flexible with your location is just what you need to land a great job!
- Research cities of interest. Read their newspapers (most are on-line now) or check out the city's websites.
- Reference USA can help you research companies in the area to target. You may find a mid-sized or smaller company that might not be as well-known but is still a great fit.
- Try to visit the city you are looking at. Possibly do some informational interviewing while you are there.
- Connect with people that live in that city and/or work for a company that you are interested in. LinkedIn is a great way to network on-line. Join groups in your field and seek out professionals or organizations. MU Connect can help you get connected to Marquette alumni who want to help you with your job search! Also, if you are a member of any professional organizations, they often have chapters scattered around the U.S. and other members that may be willing to help.
- Conduct informational interviews on the phone or in person, if possible, in order to learn more about certain jobs or companies. Also, talk to others that have relocated and find out if they have any advice.
- Marquette University Career Services Center has a reciprocity agreement with the other Jesuit universities in the country. This means that if there is a Jesuit institution in the area you are searching, you can use their career services center resources as well.
- Golden Eagle Search is a web-crawler and searches any non-password protecting job posting site. A huge time saver!
- Look at localized job search websites for posting. Find that city's equivalent of milwaukeejobs.com.
- Consider contacting temp agencies in the area if you have a specific start date or date you are moving regardless of employment. Temping can be a great way of establishing connections and getting your foot in the door.
- The Career Services Center also has a webpage dedicated to relocation strategies .
