Making the Most of a Career Fair: WORKFORCE 2009

Attending career fairs is a great way to meet employers and to learn about job and internship opportunities.  Here are a few steps that you can use to prepare and make the most of this year's fair.

Before the Career Fair

  • Attend the Career Fair Prep Workshop on Monday, September 15, 2008, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Alumni Memorial Union Ballroom. This is a great way to make sure you are fully prepared for the Career Fairs this fall.  A representative from Direct Supply will present on how to work a career fair from the employer perspective and our trained staff will also be critiquing resumes, so bring along your resume!   Food will be provided.
  • Write a resume highlighting skills and experiences related to your goal. Click here to check out the Career Services Center resources for resume writing.  You can also ask questions at our walk in hours: Monday – Friday from 12pm – 2pm.
  • Identify employers of interest.  A list of the employers that will be at the Career Fair is available at www.marquette.edu/csc.  Try to keep an open mind, hospitals need accountants and accounting firms need PR staff…  Research the companies and organizations you are interested in so you can ask meaningful questions.
  • Develop your Professional Image.  Pull together a professional outfit.  Suits are appropriate, but if you don’t have a suit, you can borrow one from a friend.  Dress pants and a sweater can also look professional.  For tips, check out the Dress for Success handout at www.marquette.edu/csc/students/documents/DressforSuccess_UP96.pdf
  • Prepare Your 60 Second Commercial.  This is a professional way to begin an intelligent and effective conversation with employers.  Be sure to address:
    • Where you are now (degree, program, year in college)
    • Where you have been (career-related experience)
    • Where you are going (future goals)

    For example:

“Hello.  I’m Dot and I will graduate in 2008 with my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication.  As a student here at Marquette, I have had the chance to gain leadership and organizational skills through my involvement with the ABC Club.  In addition, I have worked for two years as a server at the Annex allowing me to gain valuable customer service experience.  I am seeking an internship in the field of public relations for the coming summer.  Can you share with me any opportunities within your organization that might fit with my skills and experience?”

What to Bring:

  • Copies of your resume on quality resume paper (Bring more than you think you will need: you don’t want to find a great employer and have run out of resumes!)
  • A portfolio or folder for your resumes and materials from employers.
  • Your SMILE!  A friendly attitude is part of a positive professional image.

At the Career Fair

  • Turn off your cell phone!
  • Locate your chosen employers on the map
  • Offer you hand for a professional handshake (one shake)
  • Begin the conversation with your commercial
  • Ask the employer a question relating to your career goal
  • Ask the employer for next steps and get the employer’s business card

After the Fair

Employers attend Career Fairs to meet students, not to make offers.  The offers come through a continued conversation with the employer through follow up.  Aside from attending the fair, follow up is the most important part!

  • Send a thank you email or letter to the employer after the fair.  Be sure to include a copy of your resume.
  • Act on the steps the employer gave you at the fair: apply online, sign up for a campus interview, etc.

Good Luck at the 2009 Workforce Career Fair!

Resume Writing

Top 10 Resume Writing Blunders to Avoid

10.  TOO LONG!  The resume of a new graduate should—with very few exceptions—be limited to one page in length.

9.   NO DEGREE!  Always write out the degree you will be receiving in the “Education” section.  For example, “Bachelor of Arts in Psychology”.

8.   TOO WORDY!  A good resume is a concise resume.  Use bulleted action word statements to describe your experiences and stay away from personal pronouns (I, me, my, etc.).

7.   USE OF A TEMPLATE!  Fight the urge—really.  There are so many reasons why you should never use a template.

6.   NO OBJECTIVE!  Employers often receive hundreds of resumes for a variety of positions—do you really want them try and guess what job you are applying for?

5.   INAPPROPRIATE E-MAIL ADDRESS!  Everything included on your resume must be professional, so no cutesy or otherwise inappropriate email addresses in your contact information.

4.   POOR CHOICE OF FONT!  Usually using one font is best (sometimes two are okay).  Also, don’t size your font too small—for reference, Times New Roman in 11 point is small enough.

3.   NO DATES OR LOCATIONS!  Always include dates and locations (city, state) of all jobs and education.  It is also nice to include dates for other listed achievements.

2.   NO BULLETS!  Employers spend approximately 20-30 seconds skimming your resume, so it will benefit you to make your resume as reader-friendly as possible.  Bullets with action words are always better than a block paragraph of information.

And the #1 Resume Writing Blunder to Avoid…

1.   TYPOS!  You MUST re-read your resume and NOT rely on spell check (did you know spell check does not catch typos of words that are in all CAPS?).  Then, you should have one or more other people read it over, too.

For more information on resume writing, please visit: http://www.marquette.edu/csc/students/sampleresumes.shtml

And don’t forget to call 288-7423 to make an appointment with a Career Counselor to answer any specific questions you have about resume writing or drop by the Career Services Center during walk-in hours this spring every Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Career Interns are also available on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the AMU outside the Brew Bayou.

ask dot

Dear Dot,

I've heard a lot about the Workforce Career Fair coming up but aren't most career fairs for people in business and technical majors? I'm getting my degree in Communications and was wondering if there will be any employers there that I can talk to?
