Top 10 Resume Writing Blunders to Avoid

10.  TOO LONG!  The resume of a new graduate should—with very few exceptions—be limited to one page in length.

9.   NO DEGREE!  Always write out the degree you will be receiving in the “Education” section.  For example, “Bachelor of Arts in Psychology”.

8.   TOO WORDY!  A good resume is a concise resume.  Use bulleted action word statements to describe your experiences and stay away from personal pronouns (I, me, my, etc.).

7.   USE OF A TEMPLATE!  Fight the urge—really.  They are much harder to edit and the formatting can be extremely frustrating!

6.   NO OBJECTIVE!  Employers often receive hundreds of resumes for a variety of positions—do you really want them try and guess what job you are applying for?

5.   INAPPROPRIATE E-MAIL ADDRESS!  Everything included on your resume must be professional, so no cutesy or otherwise inappropriate email addresses in your contact information.

4.   POOR CHOICE OF FONT!  Usually using one font is best (sometimes two are okay).  Also, don’t size your font too small—for reference, Times New Roman in 11 point is small enough.

3.   NO DATES OR LOCATIONS!  Always include dates and locations (city, state) of all jobs and education.  It is also nice to include dates for other listed achievements.

2.   NO BULLETS!  Employers spend approximately 20-30 seconds skimming your resume, so it will benefit you to make your resume as reader-friendly as possible.  Bullets with action words are always better than a block paragraph of information.

And the #1 Resume Writing Blunder to Avoid…

1.   TYPOS!  You MUST re-read your resume and NOT rely on spell check.  Then, you should have one or more other people read it over, too.

For more information on resume writing, please visit: http://www.marquette.edu/csc/students/sampleresumes.shtml

And don’t forget to call 288-7423 to make an appointment with a Career Counselor to answer any specific questions you have about resume writing, submit your resume for critique to career.services@marquette.edu, or drop by the Career Services Center during walk-in hours this Spring every Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Career and Internship Connections (CICs) for 2009

CICs are career events in NYC, DC, Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles held over the January break for full-time and internship positions. The events have a morning career fair open to all undergraduates from the consortium schools and afternoon interviews.

While the December 1st pre-selection deadline is passed, you are still encouraged to attend the events. Up to 20% of interviews at the CIC’s are scheduled through the Morning Open-Forum, and many employers even hold space for interactions they have at that time .

Many of these employers will not be traveling to your home campus, but will be happy to meet with you in their local city. These events are an excellent opportunity to network and interview face-to-face with prospective internship and full-time employers.

Visit http://www.rochester.edu/careercenter/students/cic/index.html and click on the registration tutorial for complete registration details, list of employers registered thus far, etc. This year's PASSWORD TOKEN is "cic2009".

CICs 2009 dates are:

Boston - January 5th

West Coast (Los Angeles) - January 6th

Washington, DC - January 7th

Midwest (Chicago) - January 8th

New York - January 9th

As always, the Career Services Center is ready to assist you with your resume, navigate the CIC web system and prepare for CIC interviews.
