Since your graduation from MU, what has been your career path?
I graduated mid-year, which is challenging when you are looking for a teaching position. Luckily, there was a long term substitution opening. I was hired with a month of my graduation. I taught Spanish I to 8th graders. The school district was starting an Immersion School the following year. They encouraged me to apply, and I was hired. I have been teaching in Minnetonka Public Schools for over 2.5 years now. I know teach 1st grade in an immersion school.
Describe your typical workday.
It is a busy one! I get to work at about 7:00am. The kids start to arrive around 7:50. I teach 1st grade (all the subject) in Spanish to students who are native English speakers. They keep me active. We are all tired by 2:40 when I dismiss them. I then usually have meetings until 3:30. After my meetings, I have to prep the next day/week. I usually leave school around 5:30pm.
What is the best or most exciting part of your profession?
Working with the kids. It's amazing to witness them learn a second language. It is so easy for them.
What advice would you provide for a job seeker in your field?
You will learn a lot in the field. Ask for help from other experienced teachers when you need it. Be ready to put in many hours.
What are essential skills one must possess for success in your field?
Patience, Communication, Positive Attitude
What can a current Marquette student do to effectively prepare for a career in your field?
Work with students in a variety of settings. Also, practice interacting with their parents.
How does one find a summer job or internship in your field, and are there any other opportunities to gain experience before graduation?
Your field placements and student teaching are very helpful. I would recommend working with kids in the summer. There are lots of camps or recreation programs. I would look on the ymca's website, your local recreation department's website, and etc.
