It is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed by life events or emotional concerns. Life can seem pretty bad when you are going through a breakup, or when you learn that your parents are divorcing. You can also start feeling sad when you are living away from home for the first time. School may be a struggle and leave you feeling down. In fact, depression is fairly common among college students who often are living on their own for the first time, developing new relationships, exploring new identities, and challenging old ideas.
For some individuals, time and self-help are the best treatments for these bouts of self-doubt, low self-esteem, and occasional feelings of being sad, overwhelmed, and "just not up to the challenge." Others may want or need something more. Either way, it is important to acknowledge your feelings and take some action.
Why Is Seeking Help Important?
Depression is treatable. However, without treatment, depression can deepen or create other health problems. The sooner treatment begins the more likely it will be effective. Don't prolong it. Help yourself, even if right now you feel hopeless, exhausted, or trapped. It is important to address anything that prevents you from enjoying your college experience.
