What to expect when you call:

The receptionist will help you schedule an individual counseling appointment that fits within your schedule. Appointments are approximately 45-60 minutes. Please be ready with your student identification number. You will be asked to provide a brief reason (i.e., a sentence or so) about why you are scheduling the appointment. This information will help the receptionist schedule you with a provider who will best meet your needs, and it will help the provider know why you are coming to the Counseling Center.

Your first appointment:

It is normal to be nervous for your first appointment at the Counseling Center. You will meet with your provider to discuss your concerns. Your provider will likely also ask about other health information (e.g., eating, sleeping, medicines you take) to ensure they have a good understanding of your situation. These questions might not be asked if you are only coming to the Counseling Center with career concerns. At the end of the appointment, you and your provider will decide on a plan that best suits your needs.

Confidentiality:

Everything you say at the Counseling Center is held in confidence, meaning the provider cannot discuss it with other people. The counselor can only break confidentiality if you indicate you are very likely to hurt yourself or someone else. The counselor also may need to break confidentiality if you report that a child you know of is being abused or neglected or in the rare event that a judge orders the records to be opened as part of a legal proceeding. If you have any questions or concerns about confidentiality, please discuss them with your counselor.

Hours:

The Counseling Center is open from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. The latest appointment we offer begins at 3:00 p.m. The Counseling Center is closed on weekends. If you are in crisis during normal business hours but do not have scheduled appointment, please use our walk-in services. If you are in crisis outside of our normal business hours, contact the after-hours counselor through the Department of Public Safety at 414-288-6800. If you are experiencing a life threatening crisis-contact 911 or go to the nearest ER located at 945 N 12th St.
