What is Well City Milwaukee?

What is Well City Milwaukee?
In 2007, the City of Milwaukee committed itself to become a national leader in wellness. The goal of Well City Milwaukee is to create a more vibrant and productive workforce and to be at the forefront of effective action on issues including health care costs and disease prevention by promoting healthy lifestyles. In order to achieve Well City designation from the Wellness Councils of America  (WELCOA), Milwaukee must demonstrate that 20% of the city’s working population is employed by companies or organizations that have achieved a Well Workplace Award.

Why does Marquette want to apply for a Well Workplace Award?
It is more about Cura Personalis, care for the person, than about the award. Becoming a Well Workplace puts that commitment into action by caring for the health and wellbeing of each employee. Additionally, Cura Personalis is being carried out in our community as Marquette proudly supports the Well City Milwaukee Initiative.

What is involved in getting the Well Workplace Award?
First, this award is not something we win, but rather we achieve. To achieve the designation of a Well Workplace, Marquette has committed to the development and implementation of a results driven best practice employee wellness program. Marquette will be using WELCOA’s benchmarks as a guide to develop a wellness program specifically for our employees that will create, support and enhance a culture of health and wellness.

Wellness Committee Members

A Wellness Implementation Committee, established by the Office of the Provost, was formed in August, 2009. This committee will coordinate and promote wellness programming that already exists; and plan, create and evaluate new programs.  Committee members were appointed by their respective dean or vice president to three year terms.  The committee will is chaired by Dr. Paula Papanek, associate professor of exercise science.
