Project Overview

The Varsity Theatre is undergoing a three phase renovation. Because this building is used throughout the academic year, work is scheduled during school breaks and in the summer. The first phase, which began in 2006, improved stage lighting and sound to support the ongoing use of the theatre as a multipurpose venue. In the second phase extensive work was done in the lower level, a space that has not been used since the bookstore vacated the Varsity in the early ‘90s. The final phase of renovation began during the 2008 winter break and targeted for completion in the summer of 2009.

In the summer of 2009 the second phase of renovation was completed. Offices were constructed for the directors of the Band, Chorus and Gospel Choir. Five music practice rooms, along with a band library and storage for the band, chorus and tenants of Holthusen Hall, were added. For the first time the university has a Green Room for guests to prepare for their time on stage. Restrooms on the main floor and lower level were reconfigured and upgraded to allow for a men's and women's facility on each level.

The final phase of this project began immediately after the Spring 2009 commencement. This phase includes painting and carpeting the lobby and theatre and installing new comfortable seating. The goal of this project is to be respectful of the Art Deco character of the building, but it is not the intention to restore the building to its original condition. There are many elements of the Art Deco period in the Varsity and we are striving to enhance many of them.
