Service Project

Alumni spring into action with days of service

In conjunction with the April 20 Marquette Hunger Clean-up, where 2,000 students will participate at 50 Milwaukee service sites, alumni representing several clubs including Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Raleigh, N.C., San Francisco and Seattle will also roll up their sleeves and pitch in to support their communities this spring. The Marquette University Alumni Association salutes all clubs and chapters for their many hours of community service.

 


Bill Cosby is spring Commencement speaker

Bill CosbyBill Cosby will be the Commencement speaker at this year’s spring ceremony, which will be held Sunday, May 19. As part of the ceremony, Cosby will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree. "Bill Cosby was a pioneer in breaking down racial stereotypes on national television," said Rev. Scott R. Freedom Project connects past to the present

TessaOral history as well as that recorded in books helps us learn from the past and develop practices for today. Marquette continues to teach and celebrate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War through the Freedom Project.

Juan Hernandez

Griselda Aldrete, Arts '02, was named one of the 2013 Milwaukee Business Journal's 40 under 40. She is executive director of Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee and serves on the board of directors for the Cream City Foundation, where she also served as the interim executive director. She is pursuing her J.D. and M.B.A. from Marquette University.

Nancy HernandezNancy Hernandez, Grad '02, of Milwaukee, was recently featured on NBC Latino.com sharing insights about entrepreneurship, work/life balance, mentoring and learning from others. She founded ABRAZO Multicultural Marketing & Communications, an independent Hispanic-owned and -operated company for which she serves as president.

Christina RothDebbie (Matthew) Schmidt, Arts '93, and Erik Schmidt, Comm '93, met during their freshman year at Marquette. They married 15 years ago at Church of the Gesu in Milwaukee and have a family of five. They’ve had a wonderful journey, and credit Marquette University for that. The couple lives in Schaumburg, Ill.

Join the Ethnic Alumni Association at Alumni Reunion Weekend, July 25-28
Reconnect with friends and classmates while enjoying a full weekend of activities including Family Bowling Night on Thursday, great food and dancing on Friday night, a family-friendly block party on Saturday and an all-alumni Reunion Mass on Sunday.

The Marquette University Alumni Association will honor more than 50 alumni and friends at Alumni National Awards weekend, April 25-27. See who you may know and learn about the All-University Award recipients and all awardees, join the celebrations, make a gift to Marquette in honor of an awardee or send a congratulatory note.

Marquette graduate programs are ranked among nation's best
Three Marquette graduate programs made considerable gains in this year’s “Best Graduate Schools” rankings by U.S. News and World Report. The College of Business Administration’s part-time MBA program moved from 65th to 50th place, the College of Education’s graduate program moved up 14 places to its current rank of 65th, and the Law School’s part-time program is now ranked 18th.

Cristo Rey scholarship initiative is team effort for Northeast alumni
The Marquette Club of New York recently generated support toward its Cristo Rey Network scholarship. It's designed to help deserving students from the three Cristo Rey high schools in New York and New Jersey to attend Marquette. “Supporting the Cristo Rey scholarship helps provide the Marquette experience to outstanding students in the area, many of whom will be first generation college students,” said Marquette Club of New York President Steve Briggs, Bus Ad '08.

Former Hartman Literacy and Learning Center student gives back as a Marquette Engineering sophomore
Markesha HarrisAs a third-grade student, Markesha Harris visited Marquette’s Hartman Literacy and Learning Center to improve her reading skills. Fast forward to the present and the center celebrates 20 years of helping students like Markesha, who is flourishing as a Marquette sophomore in the College of Engineering. Read her story.


Dr. Fabien Josse honored with Haggerty research award
Through his work in investigating and developing novel sensors and sensor systems, Dr. Fabien Josse, professor of electrical and computer engineering, uses his skills to help solve water contamination and bioterrorism issues. He is also the 2013 recipient of the Lawrence G. Haggerty Faculty Award for Research Excellence. Read more about Dr. Josse and other faculty and their research initiatives.

Alumni celebrate Marquette's remarkable run to Elite Eight
Marquette alumni, students and friends rang out ahoya as the Marquette Men's Basketball team reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003. Alumni around the globe cheered on the team at 55 official game-watching events, including Anchorage, Boston and Texas. This March 30 television story highlighted Marquette pride nationwide.

Marquette will compete in the new 10-team BIG EAST Conference, as announced on March 20, beginning in 2013-14.

HIV/AIDS stigma in African-American community leads to research
Discover how Dr. Angelique Harris, assistant professor of social and cultural sciences, and a small group of mostly female activists is studying the motivating stigma that still exists in the African-American community surrounding HIV/AIDS. Marquette recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Marquette is hosting lectures and awareness-building efforts on campus to give voice to this important topic. This video highlights the sexual violence education and awareness initiatives Marquette University has undertaken to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. While Sexual Assault Awareness Month is recognized on campus each April, the university’s important work around sexual violence education continues year-round.

Marquette University President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., shared insights about fellow Jesuit and recently elected Pope Francis on the March 14 broadcast of CBS Morning News.

Rev. Steven Avella, professor of history, wrote an opinion piece about Pope Francis' first month in office and what types of traits he has displayed in that timeframe. Opinion piece appeared on CNN.com, March 29, 2013.

Vigil held for captured journalist James Foley, Arts '96
A campus vigil for Marquette alumnus and captured journalist James Foley, Arts '96, was held on April 5 to appeal for his safety and release. Foley, whose parents attended the vigil, was captured while working as a freelance journalist in northwest Syria, reporting on the civil war in the country. His whereabouts are currently unknown.

Foley spoke about his experience as a captive in Libya in a December 2011 visit to Marquette. Portions of his presentation, along with a letter he wrote to the Marquette community after his release in Libya, are available online. Community members can show their support by signing an online petition for his release at freejamesfoley.org.
