1. Get back to school. Even if it’s only part-time, take classes towards
(another) undergrad, grad, or post-grad degree. Much like anything else,
classroom skills atrophy if unused.
2. Travel. Make a list of three places you’ve never visited and travel to at
least one of those places within 12 months. On your return, add another
site and repeat the travel process.
3. Volunteer. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. As judge at an elementary
school science fair, you even get to learn new stuff.
4. Plan for retirement. Fifty dollars a month into an IRA makes for a nice
retirement “egg” after 40 years.
5. Laugh. Not only does it relieve stress, but it also makes people want
to be with you.
6. Pray. Put something on your desk – picture, crucifix, rock, stick –
that will make you think of God.
7. Become certified. It can be as an information security professional,
sign language interpreter, or lifeguard. The formal certification process
will give you valuable insight into how to better perform your own job.
8. Learn a foreign language. That includes the ability to not only speak it,
but also ead and write it. Everything is now global, and as much as we’d
like to believe otherwise, not everybody speaks English or American.
For example, you’re more likely to get hired if you speak, read, and write
Mandarin.
9. Keep in touch. Your years at Marquette gave you an almost ready-made
set of friends and acquaintances. Stay in touch with those persons
because they’ll be able to help you in all your endeavors, be it work, home,
family, sports, or just plain reminiscing about your years at Marquette.
