CIA Agent racing for New Orleans
Since Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast in 2005, Susan Haarman been profoundly involved in providing relief to those who were affected. When Katina hit, Susan had just taken a job as a campus minister at Wheeling Jesuit University. While at Wheeling, she led seven groups of people down in two years and kept crossing paths with Marquette connections through the non-profit Contemplatives in Action (CIA), an urban ministry founded by Jocelyn Sideco, a former Marquette campus minister. CIA , hosts volunteer groups, provides rest and spiritual support for loyal residents and tries to prevent burnout in folks who are down there doing long-term recovery work.
Enduring Hope: Racing for New Orleans and how you can help
After relocating to Berkeley to get her Master’s of Divinity at the Jesuit School of Theology, Susan discovered triathlons and is excited to combine her love of endurance racing with her passion for the continuing recovery in New Orleans. On Sunday, April 5, Susan is racing in the first ever New Orleans IronMan Passion Sunday –a 70.3-mile triathalon–with the goal of raising $70.30 from 1,000 people in support of CIA and the important work it continues to do in New Orleans. Why this goal? 70.3 is the mileage that Susan will cover swimming, biking, and running, and if a picture speaks more than a thousand words, what can you say about 1,000 people raising/racing for New Orleans? For more information on CIA and how to support it through Susan’s race, click here.
The meaning of Endurance
Susan’s involvement with Katrina recovery work in New Orleans has given her a new perspective. “When I think of real endurance – I think of New Orleanians. I think of families returning to ruined houses, communities demanding the reopening of schools and everyday people fighting for fair treatment in the face of government indifference and ineffectiveness. The perseverance and courage I found in this city have redefined the meaning of hope for me. It's in honor of this Enduring Hope that I decided to train and race in the New Orleans Half Ironman to raise money for Contemplatives In Action. I believe in the principle of "open source activism" – taking your gifts and talents and using them to further a cause that's important to you. I can swim, bike and run and I'm going to do it help the people of New Orleans. I credit my experience at Marquette for inspiring me to do this.”
During the training, both Susan and Jocelyn will be updating a blog, once a week throughout the 20 weeks of training for the race.
