Finish strong as formal mentor program nears completion

It’s hard to believe the 2014-15 mentor program is approaching its formal conclusion. That said, nearly 50 days remain to revisit outlined goals and focus on what you and your mentor or mentee would like to accomplish.

Mentee items to consider with your mentor:

  • Claudia and DaveDetermine what outstanding items are the most essential where your mentor can help with your professional development. Whether it’s job shadowing to better understand a career- like mentee Claudia Brokish, Arts '15, recently completed with her mentor Dave Kern, Arts '76 (see photo, right)- fine-tuning your resume, participating in a mock interview or other priorities, identify them and outline a course of action with your mentor.
  • If you’re in the same area as your mentor during spring break or even following the end of the semester, ask if meeting them or a colleague in person is possible. For example, mentee Lauren Holman, Comm '15, is traveling to Washington, D.C., next week and has been fortunate enough to secure a job shadow opportunity at Ogilvy, thanks to her mentor Lisa Ross, Jour '84.
  • As outlined throughout the program, remember it is the mentee’s responsibility to lead and drive the communication with mentors. Mentees can contact Dan DeWeerdt for assistance or questions.

Lunch provides mentee with food for thought thanks to mentor host

Mentor Kate Spears, Arts '84, has viewed her mentor relationship with Olivia Bohringer, Comm '17, as more than just the insights she can offer. So in early February, Kate hosted a lunch at her home in the Chicagoland area for Olivia along with two communication professionals Kate has known for several years.

“Having Olivia meet more senior people in marketing was a fun and relaxed way for her to share her career aspirations with others in the industry, and to learn from them about decisions they made and challenges they overcame in their own professional journeys,” Kate says.

Olivia couldn’t be more appreciative of Kate’s generosity, either. “The lunch gave me the invaluable chance to network with experienced women in multiple communication fields and see how quickly the field of advertising is changing,” Olivia says.

Five Questions With...Pat Milhizer, Comm '01
(Katie Best, Comm '17, mentee)

Pat Milhizer1. What suggestions do you have for mentees?
If a question pops into your mind, relay it to your mentor. As I learned in my j-school classes, the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask.

2. What qualities do you look for and appreciate in the people you work with or hire?
The first thing I want to see is strong writing skills in their cover letter. When I interview potential employees, I expect them to know what my company does and to be ready to present examples of how they can contribute.

3. How do you manage work/life balance?
Turn off your cellphone. It’s the only way.

A mentee's perspective: Five Questions With...Angie Preston, Arts '16
(Dr. Michael Martin, Arts '93, mentor)

Angie Preston1. What has been one of your key findings thus far as a mentee?
One of my key finding thus far as a mentee is that there is time to take a breath. One of my biggest concerns used to be graduate school; I thought I needed to go right after I graduated. Throughout this program, I realized that there is time, and it is more valuable to take time when choosing a graduate school rather than rushing into it.

2. What advice would you offer other mentees to maximize the relationship with their own mentor?
Get involved with their mentors and go beyond the minimum meetings to build a relationship with their mentor. This could mean meeting more, face-to-face or evening emailing their mentor regarding topics of interest.

3. What are your plans for the summer?
I am planning to take a course at Marquette.
