April 2015

What matters most? Complete your goals

Before looking to the formal conclusion of the mentor program, consider these questions:

  • Did we accomplish our goals? Refer to the document you completed together six months ago to chart your course. Review it, determine priorities and set a timeline to accomplish them.
  • Mentees, do you feel better informed and prepared for your career journey? Why or why not? Discuss with your mentor.
  • Can you continue the mentorship, even informally?

Register now for April 23 closing program

Spring break opens doors for mentees to learn, connect, thanks to mentors

While many students spent their spring break skiing or on the beach, on service trips, or back home with family, two program mentees took visits toward their future- journeys Lauren Holman, Comm '15, and Antonio Estrada, Comm '15 won’t soon forget.

Lauren Holman Lauren traveled to Washington, D.C., for a job shadow opportunity thanks to her mentor Lisa Osborne Ross, Jour '84, at Ogilvy in Washington, D.C., while Antonio spent time in New York City for a workday in the life of mentor Chris Pardon, Comm '92.

“The job shadow at Ogilvy was a great opportunity to get a perspective from industry professionals, both from a career standpoint as well as learning about their journey to where they are today,” said Lauren. “The visit also gave me a chance to have a better understanding of what it’s like to work in Washington.”

Thanks to Lisa and Chris for generously opening their doors to Lauren and Antonio.

Five Questions With...John Shusterich, Arts '11
(Adam Bissonette, Arts '15, mentee)

John Shusterich1. What suggestions do you have for mentees?
Don’t be afraid to ask your mentors the tough questions, and allow us to challenge you on your viewpoints and perspectives.

2. Something you wish you would’ve done at Marquette differently to help prepare for your career?
Plug in to the Milwaukee business community. Everyone here has a unique story to tell and beneficial experiences from which you can learn.

3. If you’ve had a mentor, what’s one piece of advice that has stuck with you?
Never stop challenging yourself; life is about the pursuit, not the capture.

A mentee's perspective: Five Questions With...Antonio Estrada, Comm '15 (Chris Pardon, Comm '92, mentor)

Antonio Estrada1. Has there been anything you've learned from your mentor that has taken you by surprise?
What surprised me most about my mentor is how laid back and down to earth he is. When I first read about who my mentor was, I had a pre-disposition on who I thought he was. However, from the first phone call on, all predispositions vanished. Chris is definitely a stand-up guy and all-around good person.

2. What advice would you offer other mentees to maximize the relationship with their own mentor?
Take initiative when it comes to communicating with your mentor. It’s understandable that things come up and you get busy, but chances are your mentor probably has 100 more things on their list than you do, so sometimes it’s up to you to initiate the conversation.

3. What are your current plans following graduation?
My current plans after graduation are to travel, while also looking for work abroad. However things are still up in the air as I have yet to hear from multiple companies where I applied for jobs or internships. I probably won’t know until a few weeks before graduation.
