Winsome A. Panton, Nurs ’99, Grad ’01

Winsome Panton

Winsome Panton’s philosophy is that learning is ongoing, it never stops. Her life’s work provides ample evidence.

Winsome became interested in HIV/AIDS while at Marquette, and her first clinical rotation allowed her to work in an HIV clinic. She was convinced then that she wanted to commit herself to studying HIV.

“HIV is a very dynamic field that excites me because it keeps me learning,” she says.

Winsome is a board-certified adult nurse practitioner at the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin and has been working with the HIV/AIDS population since graduating from Marquette in 2001. She cares for pregnant women who are HIV positive and has an interest in HIV patients who are also infected with Hepatitis C.

Winsome, who believes in a holistic model of care that focuses on the physical, mental, social and emotional aspects of patients, also helps mentor Marquette’s nurse practitioner students. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the National Black Nurses Association and the Metro Milwaukee Nurse Practitioner Group.

“Early on in my career I learned that my formula for success meant setting realistic goals and working to achieve and surpass those goals,” she says. “I have used this formula in both my personal and professional life. When faced with challenges, success for me includes finding creative ways to work around those challenges while remaining focused on my goals.

“As a black medical provider I feel this is an area where I can make an impact, and I want to dedicate my service to making a difference,” says Winsome, who plans to pursue a doctorate in nursing practice. I am committed to dedicating my career to ensure that African-Americans and all people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS receive the quality health care they deserve.”
