Bonnie C. Nicholson, Ph.D., Grad ’98,

Grad ’01

Bonnie NicholsonShortly after beginning her graduate studies at Marquette, Bonnie Nicholson realized she was exactly where she should be. She was impressed with Marquette’s superior academic programs and their delivery. “The personal touch and sense of giving back meant a great deal to me,” she says.

Bonnie is director of training for the counseling psychology doctoral program at the University of Southern Mississippi and has been an instructor and visiting professor at Marquette and instructor at Alverno College in Milwaukee and Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her master’s and doctoral degrees at Marquette.

Bonnie says her formula for success is a combination of “balance, commitment, faith and challenge.” Her determination to make a significant improvement in the lives of children and families was nurtured by fellow Marquette students with whom she remains close. She cites Dr. Robert Fox as an exceptional mentor during her graduate studies.

In addition to research, Bonnie devotes significant time to classroom work, offering clinical supervision to developing psychologists, another Marquette legacy. She says it’s not uncommon for her to begin a sentence by saying, “Well, at Marquette, we …”

“I seek to provide intellectual challenge, professional guidance and personal support,” she says.

Bonnie still follows the Jesuit teaching model and says, “I teach students the importance of advocating for the underserved, reaching into their communities, and offering their skills and talents freely.”
