Thomas O. Miotke, Eng ’69
The year was 1961, and Tom Miotke was a construction worker. In 1965, Tom joined the Jansen Corporation as a union laborer, then as an engineering co-op student while he attended Marquette University, where he graduated cum laude.
Fast forward nearly five decades, and Tom is the chairman of the board for The Jansen Group Inc., the parent company of Jansen Construction Inc. and Signature Group Inc. Tom was the chairman and chief executive officer of Jansen Group from 1990 to 2007.
The best part? “There is a joy in working with clients in identifying and solving their construction requisites and sharing in their project’s success,” reflects Tom, whose company has a longstanding reputation of honesty and fair dealing. “I like to transplant that joy to all my associates, clients and industry contacts.”
Tom’s connection to Marquette remains strong. He has served on the College of Engineering Alumni Association and currently serves on the College of Engineering National Advisory Council, the Professional Advisory Board for Civil Engineering and the Advisory Board for Construction Engineering and Management.
His expertise is recognized in other ways as well. Tom was awarded the Mentor Protégé Award from the Associated General Contractors of Greater Milwaukee in 2007, and was named Constructor of the Year in 2005 by the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Institute of Constructors. He also was selected for special recognition by his associated general contractor peers as the recipient of the SIR (skill, integrity, responsibility) Award.
How did Marquette contribute to this success? Says Tom, “Christian principles and values must be the foundation of all pursuits. Marquette did much in shaping these capstones.”
