Nancy A. Formella, R.N., M.S.N., Grad ‘77

Nancy FormellaWhen Nancy Formella was researching schools for a master’s program in nursing, she found everything she was looking for at Marquette.

Nancy says Marquette offered a palpable combination of accomplished professors and a sense of mission. Her professors took a personal interest in her, and she was close to fellow students. She became aware of social problems that were “much deeper than I’d imagined.”

While obtaining her master’s degree, Nancy studied at a facility connected to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee. She says her Marquette classroom and professional work prepared her to fulfill her career goals: nursing, teaching and hospital administration.

After graduating from Marquette, Nancy worked at the former St. Michael’s Hospital in Milwaukee for 3 1/2 years, then moved to Rochester, Minn., to work for Mayo Clinic hospitals. She worked in nursing administration and education at St. Marys and Rochester Methodist Hospitals before going to St. Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. There, she advanced to associate administrator and nurse executive. She also was a senior clinical consultant to Falls Church, Va.-based CSC Healthcare.

Today, Nancy is president of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, N.H. This academic medical center serves a significant population in New Hampshire and eastern Vermont and is the clinical arm of Dartmouth Medical School.

“The reason for nursing is to help people,” she says. “And in my current position, I see that I can have a broad impact on peoples’ lives. I use everything I learned as a clinician and from my graduate studies every day. I view my work as a sacred calling and am humbled to serve in this capacity.”
