There are many opportunities to connect with old and new Marquette families and current
students admitted to Marquette. These programs happen throughout the year and aim to foster
and broaden the Marquette community.

Admitted Student Receptions

• Hosted by current parents in key recruiting regions. Held in late winter/early spring (ideally over spring break while their Marquette student is home). Encourage accepted applicants to “commit” to Marquette and make their tuition deposit. Hosts incur the cost of the gathering; their expenses can be submitted for gift in-kind credit.

Alumni Congratulatory Phone Calls to Admitted Students

• Made by regional, local, college and interest-based clubs to accepted applicants in February. Alumni offer information about the specific college or program in which the applicant is interested.
• Parent-to-parent calls occur in June. Friendly calls to parents of deposited students serve as a welcome and an opportunity to answer questions new parents may have about the university.

Alumni-endorsed Applications

• Alumni Endorsement PDF available on MU Connect.
• Alumni print endorsement “coupons” and give to high school seniors who would make great Marquette students.
• Students enter alumni code on application.
• Students who use endorsement are entered into a prize drawing.

Alumni in High Schools

• Marquette alumni who are high school teachers or guidance counselors may serve as representatives, encouraging students to apply to Marquette. The Admissions Office can provide gifts and additional MU information to feature Marquette in their high school.

Campus Event Volunteers

• Parents can play a key role by volunteering at Preview, Orientation and Family Weekend to make new parents and students feel welcome at Marquette.

College Fairs

• Parent and alumni volunteers across the country help recruit students by representing Marquette regionally at their local college fairs (September, October, November).

Summer Send-offs

• Held in late July or early August. Another way for incoming students to stay connected to Marquette over the summer months. Hosted in targeted locations by alumni and parents. Hosts incur the cost of the gathering; expenses can be submitted for gift in-kind credit.

The AMUW seeks to promote the interests of Marquette’s past, present and future women
students, linking all in a common endeavor. The AMUW provides opportunities for service with
peers and strives to enhance women’s educational and cultural opportunities. AMUW welcomes volunteers to assist with events/projects and, if interested, to serve on the board of directors.

A reunion celebration is only a success if classmates come back to celebrate. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities around Reunion Weekend (time commitments are flexible).

• Soliciting peers for class gift.
• Writing postcards to classmates.
• Serving as a class social media ambassador.
• Acting as class liaison for alumni e-newsletter and Class Notes submissions.
• Coordinating a regional pre-reunion event (e.g. community service project, Happy Hour at nearby venue, social event around basketball, home gathering, etc.).
• Recording personal voicemail message(s) sent to classmates, encouraging reunion attendance and giving.
• Soliciting sponsorship for Friday night parties (5 to 45-year reunions).
• Volunteering at Alumni Reunion Weekend.

Engaging with one of our many active college alumni boards provides opportunities to interact with students, college faculty and administrators, and of course, alumni. Membership responsibilities on these structured boards, which usually involves an orientation process conducted by board leaders, include:
• Collaborating with colleges on various initiatives (including student mentor programs).
• Planning alumni gatherings (including game-watching events, fundraisers and service projects).
• Supporting the Alumni National Awards selection process.
• Working with Admissions on student recruitment activities.

Marquette’s Ethnic Alumni Association (EAA) has connected alumni of color for more than a decade. The EAA, open to alumni interested in strengthening and celebrating Marquette’s diversity, plans yearly activities that engage alumni and students through social gatherings, student “study breaks” and networking events.

Haggerty Museum of Art volunteers can be alumni, parents or friends of the Marquette community. Opportunities include service through the following:

• Docents — Anyone can be trained to give tours to school groups, visitors and at special gatherings.
• Fall Gala Committee — The Haggerty is always looking for volunteers who enjoy event planning and auctions. This annual black-tie event, held in the galleries, helps to support to museum’s exhibitions and education programs.
• Friends Board — Must apply for service on the board

Basketball Gatherings
• Whether it’s National Marquette Day or another game during the season, regional and global programs provide opportunities for alumni, parents and fans to feel close to the action of Marquette basketball. For National Marquette Day, hosts and guests in attendance are encouraged to participate in social media contests and the opportunity to submit photos, which could be displayed on the BMO Harris Bradley Center jumbotron during the game.

Home/Office Gatherings
• Marquette alumni, parents and friends can open their homes or lend office space for networking and/or social Marquette gatherings.

Outreach Around Faculty Travel
As we capitalize on faculty travel, volunteers can help to:
• Call alumni or new students, inviting them to attend gatherings.
• Host an informal social gathering with faculty at a home or business.
• Find venues for casual dinners with faculty members.

Supper for 12 Strangers
• Since 1973, Supper for 12 Strangers has brought together members of the Marquette family who arrive as strangers but depart as friends. Alumni, faculty and staff hosts open their doors to Marquette students, providing a little taste of home over an evening meal and good conversation. Program registration typically opens in early October (marquette.edu/supper), with supper dates in early/mid-November. Hosts determine the details of their own event, including the number of student guests. Sponsored by the AMUW.

Apply for service on this board, which directs the strategic plan for the Marquette University Alumni Association (MUAA). The board meets on campus three weekends each year — in conjunction with the start of the academic year, basketball season, and Alumni National Awards Weekend (late April). These campus gatherings allow volunteers to interact with students, faculty and staff and university leadership. Board members stay connected with each other and alumni engagement staff nearly year-round through committee work.

Regional alumni clubs host varied programs throughout the year. General volunteer opportunities include:
Club President
• Responsible for overall operation of the club and serving as liaison between MU and the club region. Usual term: approximately two years though time commitment can vary based on availability/interest.
Event Coordinator/Promoter
• Responsible for planning larger events such as a leadership forum or smaller gatherings including service projects and happy hour socials; can be a one-time or continual commitment; volunteers can plan and conduct a similar annual event each year.
Regional Admissions Chair
• Responsible for working with an Admissions counselor to fill volunteer roles for Admissions programs (see Admissions section on page 3 for more information).
Regional Volunteer
• Includes range of opportunities such as working a registration table or taking pictures at an event; can be a one-time commitment or more frequent.
Social Media Chair
• Responsible for posting and promoting club offerings or opportunities via Facebook, LinkedIn and/or Twitter.

Class Notes (print and online)
Alumni can submit an entry to Class Notes regarding a promotion, marriage or new baby. In addition, alumni couples (known as Marquette Sweethearts) can share their milestone anniversary (such as 5, 10, 15, etc.). Class Notes appear quarterly in Marquette Magazine, and three alumni are highlighted monthly in the online alumni e-newsletter.

An alumnus, alumna or friend of the university may be nominated for consideration of an
Alumni National Award, which are presented in All-University, college and affinity-based categories.

CIRCLES eMentor Network
• Marquette students can seek advice and support from Marquette alumni through LinkedIn. Mentors and students decide together how often they wish to communicate and by what means (email, phone, inperson meetings). More information is available at linkedin.com through the CIRCLES eMentor Network.

• Alumni can connect and network with more than 14,000 alumni who are part of the Marquette University Alumni Association group. To join the MUAA group, alumni can visit LinkedIn and search Marquette University Alumni Association.

MU Connect
• Alumni can join MU Connect, the university’s online alumni community that offers access to thousands of online trade journals and publications as well as an extensive alumni directory. Information available at marquette.edu/alumni.

Alumni, parents and friends considered experts in their industries/fields may serve as speakers at a variety of program offerings, from club-sponsored leadership forums to CIRCLES programs. Well-connected alumni, parents and friends assist Marquette’s planning efforts by connecting the university with individuals who can also serve as speakers/content experts. These programs may be held at a company, private club or unique venue where constituents can help Marquette gain access to space.

The Young Alumni Association (YAA) is a local Milwaukee alumni board that provides an opportunity for our most recent alumni (undergraduates from the past ten years) to stay engaged with Marquette and one another. The board plans several events annually, ranging from a volleyball tournament, a Habitat for Humanity build, Happy Hour socials, and Marquette men’s basketball game-watchings. The board also actively fundraises for the Milwaukee Alumni Scholarship Fund. The group strives to keep event registration costs low for young alumni and welcomes leads on any sponsorship opportunities or venues with alumni owners.
