Charles M. Swoboda Charles M. Swoboda, Eng '89, was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 2004.

He is chairman and chief executive officer of Cree Inc., a publically traded LED lighting company headquartered in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park.  Cree is leading the LED lighting revolution to replace conventional lighting technology with energy-efficient LEDs, which use one-tenth the energy of incandescent light bulbs and last more than 10 years.

Chuck joined Cree in 1993 helping it grow from a small company with a few dozen employees and $6 million in revenue to a global company with more than 3,000 employees worldwide, annual revenues of approximately $550 million and a market capitalization of approximately $2.8 billion. He has served as chief executive officer since 2001 and chairman of the board of directors since 2005.

He received the Spirit of Marquette Award in 2004 and is a member of the Marquette University 1881 Society.
