Perhaps one of the scariest questions you will ask yourself is how you and/or your family will be able to pay for Marquette University. These next sections are designed to help you understand both the financial aid process

Marquette University is committed to helping you receive the best education and help you with the financial aid process. Marquette Central staff are here to help you with any financial aid questions you may have.

What is FAFSA?

Financial aid is monetary assistance to help you meet the expenses of going to college. Your financial aid award may include one or a combination of Marquette University, state and federal loans, grants, scholarships or employment opportunities.

To apply, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Know that it’s entirely FREE to complete and submit the FAFSA.

Once you've submitted your application, the U.S. Department of Education uses the information on your FAFSA to determine your expected family contribution (EFC). The EFC is an indicator of your family’s financial strength and is used to determine your student aid eligibility and financial aid award. The EFC is not how much aid you will receive or how much you will need to pay for college.

Begin Early

Apply early - file your FAFSA between October 1 and January 15 to be considered for all types of financial aid. FAFSAs received February 1 or later may result in a reduced financial aid award. The Marquette University FAFSA code is 003863.

Take Charge

Pay attention to all the details when filing your FAFSA and when you receive your financial aid award.

  • After you file your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Department of Education. Check it for accuracy and follow up on any requests for additional information.
  • Watch your eMarq email for financial aid award notifications and/or requests for additional documentation. Read and follow all instructions.
  • Contact Marquette Central if you have special or extraordinary circumstances to consider with your financial aid award.

Verification

If you are selected for verification, the accuracy of the FAFSA information must be confirmed before financial aid can pay to your student account. We encourage you to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when filing or correcting the FAFSA. This allows an automatic transfer of tax-related data. Make sure to submit all required documentation in a timely manner.

Marquette University Expense Worksheet

Using the Expense Worksheet prior to accepting your financial aid is highly encouraged to get a clearer image of how much it will cost to attend Marquette. The Expense Worksheet can be found in a link under the Financial Aid Quick Links tab on the CheckMarq homepage. This worksheet shows you the direct cost of attending Marquette while considering your financial aid award.

Accepting your Financial Aid

You will be informed via your eMarq email that your financial aid award is ready for viewing. Login to your CheckMarq account and click on the “Accept/Decline my Financial Aid” link under the Financial Aid Quick Links tab on the CheckMarq homepage.

Scholarships and grants are automatically accepted for you. You can accept/decline Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loans in CheckMarq. Optional Loans cannot be accepted in CheckMarq. Accepted aid will be evenly split between the fall and spring semesters.

Additional Things to Keep in Mind

Check your eMarq email frequently. You will be notified if you need to complete entrance counseling and/or complete an electronic master promissory note. Students must report all outside private scholarships to Marquette Central. Depending on the amount, need-based aid may be changed.
